If potential landlord wants to do a credit check on you , do they need your social insurance number?
If so , isn't it dangerous to give out one's SIN?

There are only a few entities that you are required to give your SS# to, such as the IRS, your employer, your Bank. Basically anyone who handles your money. Others may ask but no one else can require it of you. Then again the landlord does not have to rent to you.

You do bring up a point about trust with a new potential contract holder.
Both the landlord and the renter have reservations about each other, yet both want to make an agreement for the property.
This might make a good idea for a business model.
Does anyone in your area offer a service to act as the go between similar to escrow?

Yes. And if you don't trust the landlord, you have a bunch of other problems. It is possible to get a credit check without it, but then you need a lot of data like current and previous addresses, etc.

jdlifsey
If you don't provide your SSN, the landlord will either not rent you the apartment or will charge you more for it.

Yea its risky. But it's the only way they can run your credit. Make sure the landlord is legit before you go and give them your personal info.

You mean Your Social Security Number? You have to give him written permission in a form an application. And yes, he has too look out for his investment. If you feel that your land lord to me creeps you or give you an inclination he may use your identity, let him know your actively aware of any changes in you credit information and are willing to exercise any reciprocity under the law.
