I believe this should always be based on income. If he is making $1,000 week and you make $250, he should pay 3/4 of the rent/monthly expenses and you should pay the other 1/4.
The notion that this should be split in half is dated. |

What's wrong with a split down the middle for $395? |

1/2.
Income has nothing to do with it.
If you were married, then it's a different story.
Being not married and just living together, if you don't pay your fair share and let the guy pay for stuff, then there is a word for this . . .

395--1/2
and have a mediator in advance signed up to solve disagreements.
and pay him nothing; pay it direct via check, to the LL.
if that does not work, do not roomie with him.
never give your rent $ to anyone but the LL. and get a
receipt! |

are the utilities included? if they are then a 50/50 is not so bad, however if they are not then add all the bills together and divide then by the percentage of income you both make. i.e he makes 75% of the income he pays at least 65% of the bills this way you both still have enough money for food and personal item, as well as money to put into savings. |

Base it on your incomes which is fair. Take your income and divide it by the total of yours plus his. For example, if you make 40% of the total household income, then you could pay 40% of the rent. Remember there is electricity, gas, cable, internet, etc. which are also expenses. |
