If someone owns a piece of land, do they own it all the way to the center of the earth?

Catmandoo.
Only if there isnt anything of value there. If there is then the government will take it!!!

Yes, and it's use is up to the laws governing such use and when such use does not interfere with the neighbor's right of quiet enjoyment of their property. In case you want to build a bomb shelter pretty long ways to go to the center of the earth.
The basic definition of real estate is: from the surface of the earth down to the center of the earth to a point and from the surface of the earth up to infinity, plus all permanently attached improvements and the bundle of rights associated with the title. Rights to use (not the ownership) the air space above the real estate are usually reserved to the Government for the benefit and or protection of the public. However it does not impede the real estate owner from using their air space to say for example granting of a scenic easement.
Rights such as minerals could have been severed by the government at the time of patent or could have been severed from the bundle of rights by a previous owner in which case mineral rights under the property are no longer considered real estate within the bundle of rights but are now personal property.

Theoretically, yes, if you own a piece of land, you own the area under it to the center of the earth (wedge shaped) as well as the air space above it out into space. The reason I say theoretically, is that you need to see you title for any limitations on it. If this is a matter that can be of financial importance (ie: mineral rights) contact a land use attorney and seek their help.

i think it's about 10ft in Britain, don't know about anywhere else.
British government ain't stupid, they thought of that one centuries ago.

it depends where you are. many areas you own the land, but do not have mineral rights.

roy gogia
I do ot thik so,That is why the plot is measured sq feet &sq mtrs.

I always think it is fascinating that owning land doesn't give you many rights to actually do things with it. For example, mining rights are not necessarily yours if you own land, nor are development rights. You can't shoot someone that trespasses. In fact, it is no fun at all!

The short answer is "yes", but it doesn't imply the right to do or stop anyone doing stuff.

No mining rights are owned by the Government.

Yes but the right of the government to tunnel through your land supersedes your right of ownership

In theory, you own the land from the centre of the earth up to the top of the atmosphere. However, this ownership is over-ruled by other acts such as that for mining etc. Also, you don't have any right to charge the aircraft which flies over your land.

There was a case where someone tried to take action against a pilot - accusing him of "trespassing". The court ruled that even though the pilot was flying over the persons land, his presence (the aircraft) would have no impact on the owners life.

speedball182
No. for the same reason that you do not own all the air above your land (some old case involving some lord).

There are (i believe) measurements and allowances for the depths below and height above your land that you do own.
