Not okay, and yes you can get into trouble. Whether or not your wife is required depends on the state you are in and on your lender. If you are in a state where a female automatically has interest in any real estate the male spouse owned or purchases, then you are required by law to disclose your marital status and your wife has to sign (she does not have to be on the loan though). However, sometimes, your lender will require spousal signature no matter what state you are in.
REGARDLESS, on a loan application, you sign stating that you did NOT falsify any information. If you state you are single but you are not, it's punishable by law. And they will be able to tell if you are married.
Some states, should you hold title a certain way, your spouse does not have to sign anything but you still need to provide your real marital status. (as stated above though, your lender still might require her to sign) |

Fraud is illegal, it is never "ok". Your income tax returns and credit reports will all make it obvious that you are married.
If you manage to fool them and they discover the fraud later they can both recall the loan and press criminal charges. |
