Waterlily1913 | If you close in 3 weeks is it a good idea to go ahead and put utilities in our name? |
Additional Details The home owners have asked us if we want to pay some rent monies to move in earlier than Our Closing? and utilities transfer.

You don't have a written contract as a tenant, and you're not the homeowner yet. Does it make sense to have utilities turned on? What if the furnace goes bad in three days? Who has to pay for it? What if the hot water tanks goes out? Who pays for it?
OK, is it a good idea to put the utilities on in your name? |

I'd wait until after the closing to do it. That way you don't get stuck with charges before you move in. |

You can call the utility companies and tell them to begin service at the new address on the day you close. I just did this over the summer, and then my closing date moved, and it was no big deal to reschedule the utilities. |

Anything can go wrong. You can close later than you thought. I say Waite. |

No. You normally can not open new ulitity accounts until you take occupancy. Worst case, you pay for utilities and don't close. What would that cost you? Is the benefit worth the risk? If so, go for it. Otherwise, wait until you move in. |

I wouldn't think this is a good idea. I have seen deals fall apart at the last minute because of financing, even after the loan officer practically guaranteed the loan.
Wait until you legally take possession to assume those responsibilities. |

I'd wait. Things always come up to delay closings. But with the market slow down you might not encounter those types of problems. However, I'd wait because brokers and lenders will tell you what you want to hear to keep you on a string. |

Wait until one week before closing and make it effective the day of closing. Don't do the rental thing. If you don't close it gets messy.

Wait, you never know if something may go wrong and the closing date gets moved. It happens all the time. |
