If you get evicted from a house do you have to pay for the locks being changed by you old landlord?

cs2005
YOU DONT, THE LANDLORD HAS TO PAY FOR THIS

curtisports2
You can be held liable for any expense associated with having to evict you and secure the premises against you re-entering. This would include changing the locks.

Everyone who said 'no' doesn't know the law.

jenn
Me being a renter as well, I know that it is up to the property owner, property management or the landlord to replace the locks after you move out. Or if the locks where damaged while you where living there , the damage to the property, even if it was the locks should only be taken out of your dpst.

Yoni
No. 100% not

no. haha

No, it is the landlord's responsibility as a security measure for the next tenant.

Ebs
No way. If you're kicked out (sorry if you have been) you should have nothing to do with the house. Especially changing the locks. What does that matter to you. It isn't YOUR home you're changing the locks for.

buzz
It depends on local regulations and your lease.

If you get evicted because you haven't been paying rent it's kinda moot point, isn't it? If you aren't paying rent the landlord will be happy to get whatever he can.

If you get evicted because the your lease is expired MOST states and municipalities don't require that you pay for locksmith services unless there was a provision requiring you to do so in your lease.

Jacob A
No, as long as the locks left behind are the original locks that were there when you moved in.

standinglynx
It depends on what your agreement says that you signed when you moved in. Also, they need to give you X amount of days to retreive your items. If there is a problem with that, call a policeman to escort you on to the property to retrieve your items in the presence of your landlord. If it goes to court, ask that it not be charged to you. There is usually a part of your local government that deals with tenant rights and issues. Call your county clerk and see in what direction they can point you to get the answer. Good luck.

sdyankton
Generally no, unless it is in your lease.
If you signed it, it is binding, so you may want to go back and look at that. They can, and probably will, withhold some of your deposit to change them, but if you were evicted, your deposit has most likely been used up already.
The best thing to do is to take a poop in the middle of the floor before you leave. They will think it's funny and you can leave knowing you made a statement.
Hope this helps!

majority of states say yes if you were put out for non payment etc. yes you are liable t change locks it is to your benefit because if someone else were to do damage to that place and you weren't residing there you wouldn't want to pay for something that you didn't do right? thats why it protects you too.

Karen
UUHHHH NO!
And even if u did, wut would they do, arrest u?!?!?

reenzz
It depends.... Did you change the locks anytime during your tenancy? Did you return all the keys when you were evicted? Did you give keys out to any unauthorized persons? Did you damage the lock in any way? If yes to any of these...then yes you are responsible for the costs.

goingmad
Yeah and the rent for his new tenant as well! :-) don't you dare pay one penny for if he broke the locks he replaces them OK! Once he put you out your liability other than any rent arrears or damage other than reasonable wear and tear ended.

max
No, you don't have to pay for the lock change. The law states that every time that a tenant vacates a premisses, the locks are to be changed by the property owner, or manager, in order to prevent a previous tenant from being able to access the premisses. This law is used in nearly all states. To be sure what your states requirements are you can check with your local housing authority. They can direct you where to look online for a copy to download.

alicia j
the answer is HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!! who told you that lie
