K | If you knew you were only gonna live somewhere for 4 months what furniture would you buy??? |
Im gonna move to an apartment near Ft.Campbell KY but only for 4-5 months and then Im gonna move to Utah with my family because my husband is going to go to Iraq.I have an 8 month old who usually sleeps in my bed and our clothes.Im only gonna live there for a lil while to be with my husband before he leaves. What kinda furniture should I get?? Bed is a must. But should I think about getting everything for the apartment?? I cant bring it to Utah because it'll be to much hassle because by the time we move I'll have another baby. They'll be 1 yr. apart.Of course since we're just starting out and the Army doesnt pay for my plane ticket or our hotel bill or for furniture we wont have alot of money to spend. |

Can I suggest
1. Bed with a good mattress for your back since I am assuming you are pregnant. If you are not pregnant then a sofa that converts into a bed would do.
2. A foldable clothes hanger
3. A table (can use for changing nappies as well)
4. Four chairs
5. Small fridge
6. Microwave oven
7. Foot massager
You could
1. Rent the furniture.
2. Rent a partly furnished apartment.
3. Request the owner of the apartment to provide the furniture at an agreed price.
4. Borrow from friends/colleagues/advertise
5. Buy second hand.
Save the money and buy one of those fancy foot massagers, the only thing you need to take to Utah.
All the best. |

First, perhaps it would be more cost effective to rent a place that is already furnished? If your husband is there already, or going to be there before you, he needs to be out there looking!
You could look at renting the furniture you "need." HOWEVER..
you could spin this one a little different. Call and ask for the manager (only speak w him/her) tell your story, just like you did to us here. Frankly it is very touching. It is also upsetting that a soldiers wife (pregnant no less) is going through all this!!!
If you said to that manager that ANY help they could offer, blah blah blah..i.e.discount...
If he or she does not see a goldmine of good PR for his/her business???? He just may "rent" you everything for six months free!!!!!
I sure would! As long as you would let me take a picure for the newspapers!!!!
Hon everyone is in such support of our troops, you should have no problem finding whatever you need/want. Just keep spreading the word.
I would be happy to write the newspapers back there for you, with such a great story. You would get more than you need. We civilians are frustrated. There just does not seem to be enough ways to tell our troops and their families Thank You.
I could be your private PR mgr! tee hee
I can write those letters, need be. AND don't forget to tell the hubby to post on their local boards, find out what papers they have there (names), and to spread the word!!!
There are thrift stores -Martha Stewart has a great technique to cover a couch!!
When I first moved, I turned over big 'ol plastic storage boxes and covered them with some of my table cloths.
For my kitchen -I bought one non-stick sauce pan, and a spatula. One large plastic bowl. Oh and a cookie sheet. I can make just about anything you might want for dinner. Plastic plates and paper cups -good to go!!! I swear try it!!
Doesn't it all just sound like a ton of work? Is that furnished apt. sounding better now? : ) If you get the names of the local papers, you can look for rentals without the expense of a "search" co. They are usually right on the web!
Thanks again for all your sacrfices, you are what makes the Army work!
p.s. one thing -keep ALL of your receipts!!! Just stuff them in an envelope!! Nearly all your expenses will be tax deductable.
Tell your husband to do the same. |

Might I suggest cheap furniture.
I kid, but not really. Anything you buy might as well be as cheap as you can find it, since you don't know what can be put to future use. Second hand furniture stores have been a godsend for me; I can usually find furniture in good shape for a good price.
I'd suggest a sofa, bed, table and at least 2 chairs. A fridge, microwave, & all that stuff is a must too, unless you can find a place that already has them. Best of Luck to you and your family. |

something to sit on- love seat or couch
tv tables to eat from- you dont need a dining room set
maybe a cheap tv for some entertainment, you can put it on a milk crate or box for now
a dresser for your clothes (and babys)
dishes, silverware, cups (get these at a dollar store, then leave them behind when you move)
The only way it is worth getting everything is if you get it at like goodwill or salvation army or a thrift store, and then donate it back to them when you move. OR rent a furnished apartment. For short term rentals, furnished apartments are pretty economical.
Good luck! :) |

buy all used stuff that you can resell and, at least, get some of that money back... couch, small table, couple-three chairs, bed.... |

You sound like a perfect candidate for renting furniture. |

Futons are useful, can be used for multiple purposes and cheap + they don't take up that much room. |

I would buy the bare essentials like a bed, a folding table and folding chairs maybe a TV but only a small one or a portable one. For a dresser you could maybe just hang all of your clothes or live out of boxes/suitcases.
Alternatively, you could try Rent-a-Center which is pretty cheap, good quality and has lots of selection. Good luck and God bless your husband, I hope he comes back safe :) |

yard sale, bean bags, those fold up camping chairs, or head to the dollar store. |

You may like to consider renting furniture for a short term consideration. Rental furniture is sometimes used for showing off properties for sale, but also can be used for situations like yours.
Good luck for your family in the move and your husband in Iraq. |

Sometimes Goodwill has really nice things. Try there. But if you have a few more bucks to spend, why not look in the paper? People are always getting rid of something that you want.
Me? I would buy comfortable patio furniture - the kind that looks good inside and outside - with a chaise lounge. A couple of bean bags or those vinyl ottomans and a round coffee table could double as a dinette set. A desk would be good for writing letters to your hubby and/or paying bills. |
