Different states have different laws, so be careful here.
If you were going through an agent, then some additional restrictions apply, but I'm taking it for granted that you're doing this on your own.
Did you advertise the property? If so, different rules apply. Advertising can be as simple as a sign in the window.

You can be selective but have a good reason. Credit, past rental history are valid concerns, but not race, sex, religion etc. |

It's illegal to discriminate. If you don't like this person because of race, color, nationality, gender, religion, family status or disability..that is called discrimination and it's illegal according to Federal Law. |

you can rent your house to anyone that you choose , but if you put it in a realty they cannot discriminate. so as long as you don't put it in realty you can rent to who ever you choose. |

No it isnt but you need to be sure you don't like the persons and not a group or type of person, thats racism and can get you in trouble. |

It could be against the law. It could go against the Equal Housing act and be considered as Discrimination. However, this is very hard to prove. |

It is against the law to not rent to someone based on their race or religious background. As far as I know you don't have to rent to someone that you don't like as long as you are not discriminating based on race or religion. |
