If you own a piece of land, how far underground does it extend?
Like if you were to build land in the city, they could probably put an underground railway through it without your knowlege or approval Im guessing.
Additional Details
I live in the UK, if I were to start digging a hole, like when would I officially be on some Australian guy's property?

Any land you own is subject to local planning laws but it is yours both above and below ground. You would have to gain mining rights to dig down very far.

as you also own the area above your land, if a neighbours tree branches grow over your fence, for example, you can legally cut them off but you must give them back to the neighbour. You can't charge aircraft for flying over though.

The Earths crust is on average about 20 miles deep on land and then you reach the mantle - very basically molten rock under enormously high pressure. You'd have a surprise if you could dig down that far and so would everyone who lived close by, what with the new explosive volcano you'd created.

You'd still be about 6800 miles short of worrying any Australian though.

well as far as the city goes it would be considered emminent domain. basically that means they do whatever they want to your property IF its in the cities best interests. But, they would have to pay for you to move if you wanted to.

Also, if you were destroying city property or putting people at risk by drilling holes, you would have to stop...I don't know the law but its really just common sense.

While I am not a TAR, without mineral rights you own the land till you hit a deposit for layman's terms.
If I owned the rights on your land and also owned the land next door, I could set up a drill rig on my land next door and drill for oil under your property.
I explained this in simple terms as I am not a TAR or NAR, which has nothing to do with mineral rights.
The National Apartment Association does not deal with mineral rights for the record.

Adam
It doesn't at all.
If you want to own all the land underneath your property you must purchase the mineral rights, else the government can tunnel, dig, test nukes or anything down there.

Surfininjunmonkey
Great question , I learned something, so you need to have the mineral rights, what about basements and underground garages than ?

peter.jungmann
I'm sure they would need to let you know, just so you don't drill a well one day, and foul up the rush-hour commute.

If you have mineral rights, as far down as you wont to go, if you don't, until about minerals.
