If your house cost 700,000 dollars in us does that mean your pretty much rich?

I live in the UK so perhaps things are a little different here... but broadly speaking you are unlikey to own a $700,000 house without being reasonably wealthy.

I take the point that most houses are mortgaged, but very few (over here at least) are 100% mortgaged. The properties that are 100% mortgaged are normally cheper ones, for first time buyers, or those owned by desperate and (about to be) poor people. Indeed, there is typically a lot more equity in higher end houses as.

Even for the very wealthy, paying off a $700,000 loan in monthly installments for 15 odd years just isn't feasible! I know American banks have taken a lot of stick for lending irresponsibly, but to do this frequently would be just insane! I can't be bothered to do the research to come up with the maths - but I am sure that if you looked at the average US wage ($36k?), worked out the average interest rates (no idea!) then worked out how much the repayments would be - you would see that nobody could manage it.

So... in short :) .... you are not necessarily rich, but odds are you aren't poor, and are probably comfortably middle class at least!

No, it means you are in debt usually. Most have a mortgage of most of the value at least the first few years. If they bought years ago the property taxes may be more than they can pay.

Upper middle class--AND in debt,as the first respondent so correctly stated.

I means your in debt for the next 20 plus years - hope the economy keeps growing, just remeber US house prices fell 9% last month so you may be in a negative equity situation to.

Happy Days

It depends on the income the person makes. There are three possibilities. They can be in debt or financially stable or very frugal in their lifestyle, while conserving money.

You are only rich if you own it outright and sells it to realise the profit. If you are staying in it, it doesn't make a difference.

no, that means you have a large mortgage.
do you know how many people are up to their eyeballs in debt
cars, homes, credit cards etc...
just because a person lives in a big house does not mean they have money in bank, most of it goes to pay for things they have charged or mortgaged.
no cash, don't buy!

stickyricky
Thats only 350,000 pounds. Not much really.

American houses are only made out of wood and plaster board, so they take a lt of maintenance, get damp and mouldy. So they don't hold their money like brick houses.

They also tend to fall down in hurricaines which you aren't insured for.

No, the house owner could be leveraged to the hilt. It really depends on how much of the loan is paid off...

It depends on where you live. In some cities yes 700,000 would be a lot for a house but in other states no. And it depends on the mortgage.

GVD
No, it means you live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

$700,000 with no mortgage, your well off. And if you got mortgage....:( Sorry to break it to you, your not rich. And American houses are made out of brick, especially $700,000 and they are usually cleaner than most british homes (usually dirty)
