In a rental apartment is it ok to have a fish?
We are renting an apartment in which the contract specifically said 'No Pets'. Fair enough that cats, birds and dogs ruin the place with their poo and fur and feathers and scratching. Of course I understand the law is different everywhere, but how do landlords feel if a tenant got one fish?

I want to get one siamese fighting fish. They're tiny little fellows that don't need a complicated filtration system - just a tall glass jar. I will check with the landlord, but do you think it's rude to ask? Will it damage landlord-tenant relations for me to blatantly ask for something not allowed on the contract (albeit an item which will do NO damage whatsoever - guaranteed - to the apartment?)

I would greatly appreciate the opinions of landlords, tenants who have done this and especially real estate agent rental property specialists.

Thank you very much.

A fish should be fine--I think you might have trouble if you had a 300-gallon tank and it broke and flooded the apartment....but a fish in a bowl should be OK....

No, it is not too rude to ask. The landlord will probably want to hug you and wishes he had more tenants like you. It sounds like you are a nice person, and you will probably have a good relationship with him/her if you are this considerate of the lease and following the rules.

Enjoy your fish! For the record, a fish in a tall glass, wouldn't require notice on the part of my tenant to me--but a fish tank would.

usually fish are ok. make sure the tank never breaks.

Generally management doesn't mind if you get a fish. When they state no pets they are generally referring to dogs and cats etc.
Another thing when considering fish: how large of a container/aquarium will be needed, you say just a tall glass jar but some landlords frown upon larger aquariums (also water containing furniture) in case they break and cause water damage.
In your situation I think you should talk with your landlord. He will not be mad and will probably respect you more for asking him/her before just going out and getting one.
Good luck with your fish.

I am a landlord. Fish do not bother me. I would be delighted that you brought in a fish rather than sneaking in an UN-housebroken pet. Good for you!

ASK YOUR LANDLORD IN WRITING. That way your answer is also in writing and becomes a part of your rental agreement.

Generally, anything that is alive and not human is considered a pet.

Not all landlords allow fish. Especially if they have ever had a tenant that had a fish tank break and cause damage to the apartment/home.

most of the time no pets mean things like cats dogs ferrets crap like that but fish are usually acceptable and i think your landlord would appreciate that you are gunna ask before assuming fish would be ok and if he says fish are ok it is probably ok to get more then 1 fish most ppl get like a 10 gallon tank and that doesn't damage houses as long as it doesn't leak and ruin floors / carpets

Hi, I've experienced similar. Most "no pets" usually means no uncaged or uncontained pets. It would probably be fine to have a simple fish tank or bowl. A fish tank accident will just get water all over.. and lots of non living things can do that for you just fine. Out of courtesy its nice to ask you landlord.

I don't think fish count as pet in the "no pet" part of the contract. The reason they don't want you to have pets is because pets can be messy and damage the property. But fish don't do that. If you have any questions just ask the land lord or lady. It wouldn't be a problem I bet.

Zelda
I think your landlord will not be upset about you asking and will be okay with a fish. It's not like the fish is going to escape and roam the building, make noise, be destructive, or aggravate anybody's allergies.

Just ask if fish count in the 'no pets' clause. If every tenant had that much concern for the rules, I bet landlords would be much happier people.

it's considerate to ask first.

It would not be a problem at all, but of course it does depend on your specific rental. Mostly they do not want pets for terms of noise, mess, etc... But a fish does no damage and makes no noise! Maybe a huge aquarium would be a tad bit of a problem, but that's not what you're doing! Go ahead and ask your landlord- But I wouldn't be surprised if they laughed because it seems silly to have to ask! It would definitely not ruin your tenant-landlord relationship... if anything, may help it when they see how honest and rule-abiding you are!! :)
