It means you can't be in receipt of housing benefit to pay your rent.
The thing is, the council give you the option of receiving the money yourself or having it payed direct to your landlord. If you get the money yourself, how is the landlord going to know you are on benefits? |

They do not accept payment from the government. i.e dole.
i.e you have to be working or pay them cash.
Some are afraid that there flat will get wrecked if they let it out to people who are not working.
others are dodging the taxman.
I like to believe the latter seeing as i am not working myself and know that I would not damage their flat.
Actually, now that I think about it There should be a law against discrimination on the grounds of working status. |

DSS is short for Department of Social Security so basically if you receive payments from them and would rely on them to pay your rent. |

As the others have stated the landlord does not want anyone on the dole or housing benefit. The landlord cannot be held for any kind of discrimination, it's their property and they decide who lives there. I rent out a flat and when I started I followed suit and advertised it as NO DSS. I have no idea why I did it, but thought if that's the general opinion of Landlords then I should join the club. Anyway at present I have a tenant who is on the DSS and she has been with me for 4 years now and I've never had any problems from her. |

"No DSS" mean's if you are living off social security then the home owner doesn't want to know you cause they think they won't get their rent |

It means the landlords don't want tenants who are claiming benefit or expect the rent to be paid by the Department of Social Services. (DSS) now called the Department for Works and Pensions. |

They will not except housing benifits for your rent payment....In other words if you don't have a job and are on dole/sick they don't want you cause you are not a safe bet for them... |

It means the landlord is not willing to take a tenant on who is not employed or able to pay the rent without claiming it from the Social Security Dept. It is a polite way of saying ... if you claim Social Security Benefits dont even bother applying. |
