Well, obviously it depends on the size of the house and how many people are living in it. A badly insulated house with 4 people in it are going to use a lot more energy and have much higher bills!
As a VERY rough estimate, I'd allow £100 a month minimum, and that's based on 4 people sharing. If it's just you, then I'd say £300-£400 a month, depending on extras like broadband internet, television packages etc. Council tax is going to be £100 a month or more |

You need to specify an area. I live in an area which is expensive and overpriced local services.
(3years ago and its a 2 bed Victorian house in Worcester)
Rent was £400
Other bills £200
Per month.
If you budget around £300 a month for 2/3 bed house i think that would be about right for the Gas/Electric/Water |

I pay per week (for a 3 bed semi) £9 for water, approx £16 for gas and £10 for electric. Don't forget council tax, internet, tv channels, phone, etc too. |

Hi Sir XY.
We have a fixed water bill, which is 36 pounds a month (don't have a pound sign on my keyboard, annoying), no matter how much we use. I think this can vary slightly, depending on your area.
Electricity and gas isn't so easy to work out. It depends how many people you have in your house and how much you use. There are four people in our house, so we use the washing machine and lighting a lot, but we all work, so we're never in during the daytime. This might be different in a student household.
It helps to be careful, but you don't often think about that when you're a student. Pro Evo used to be on constantly, even if we weren't playing it, when I was at uni. Also, utility prices are quite a bit more now than when I was a student.
If you're sharing with 2 or 3 others, to be on the (very) safe side, I would put 50 quid away each month for bills.
My best bit of advice is to make sure you pay them every month, right from the start. Get into the habit straight away. Have a direct debit from each persons account for each sort of utility - you can divide the change later. Otherwise they can build up quite quickly.
You can soon work out if you need to budget a little more or less every month (it won't be much, either way), but don't let unpaid bills hang around - there's nothing worse.

Speak to the outgoing owner/occupant. The cost of heating a house with 4 bedrooms and no double glazing with a family of 5 using the water will be a bit different from one person living in a one-bed flat in a block where the heat will from surrounding flats will keep your bills down...sorry but I'd hate to mislead you by telling you what I pay as your circumstances could be totally different!
To keep the costs down, go on comparison sites like uswitch.com to make sure you get the cheapest providers in your area. Electricity for heating is also a lot cheaper than gas in general. That's the best advice I can give. Good luck! :-) |

I pay for a 3 bed house with 4 persons living in it
Rates 85.00 month
Water rates 42.00 month
Elec and Gas 85.00 month
Just to give you an idea. |

With the recent increases Id guess at up to £40 per month for gas and electric, each, depending on what kind of heating you have, how long per day you will be in.
Water averages out between £30-£40 per month depending on who your supplier is
Council tax is around £100 pm for a band A where I live, but that is variable (we are quite a cheap area council tax wise)
Then theres contents insurance which again depends how much cover you want and where you live, anything upwards of £20 per month.
There may be service charges if the property is in a block of flats.
Telephone, again depends on the level of service you want, internet, mobile deals etc. so you need to shop around for the best deal.
TV licence is around £13 per month on direct debit.
Cant think of anything else off the top of my head, and my chicken is burning I think |
