In the UK, what is the usual period for a mortgage to last?
And are there disadvantages (apart from the obvious extra interest) to taking out a longer mortgage? At what age do most people get to the point where they own their own home?

Cherrypicker
The usual period is 25 years but now that is changing because of people's desperation to have a home of their own. I took out my first mortgage when i was 39 and so my house won't be paid for until I am over 60. My two friends started younger and have been mortgage free for years - lucky buggers!

25 years is normal, but it varies depending on your age when taking it out. My son will own his home when he is 49 as long as he doesn't move. My brother already owns his house and he is only 46.

25 years usually.I hear the french are at a 10 year limit and you pay as much as you want, provided you payed them off in 10 years. Now they have new bank accounts here that allow you to over-pay and so they shorter terms. One of my ex bosses used to say...you get 25 years ,so you got enough time to do the place up !!!

Curious
Usual period of Mortgage: 25 years

Advantages of Longer Mortgage: Lower Repayments

Can't honestly answer the last question. Most people that own their homes outright I would say, are in their 50's upwards. depends when they bought them.

Until recently a normal mortgage would last for 25 years....the rise in house prices led to different schemes being introduced which take longer to pay off.

As long as there are no unseen complications I will be 49 when mine finishes

The most important factor is affordability. How much do you want to pay a month ? Ensure your mortgage is paid off before you retire though. Its a myth to take 25 years on a mortgage. Poor advice. Who's to say thats best. It may be 19 years for you...No-one can give you advice without the full facts from you so be careful who you ask. Speak to a qualified advisor like myself. Good luck

a morgage can last for 25yrs or less the more you put down the less the morgage or you could have any amount, the less yrs the more you pay per month,i only had mine over 12yrs but i pay "£500 per month, and depending on the cost of the house.

usually 25 years, but they have started lifetime mortgages that can be passed on to the family, dont like that idea,
most people if they are careful clear their mortgage in their 40's or 50's,dont touch interest only mortgages, opt for repayment as your mortgage slowly reduce's over the years, plus if you have any savings you can reduce it further
