irunwithbulls | Inexpensive, nice places to live in US? |
Hi, I'm looking for an inexpensive smaller town to move to in the US. I don't need to live on a coast, and don't need nightlife. My husband and I work from home so employment isn't an issue. We like all kinds of weather so cold or hot is fine, probably somewhere in between is best. It's important to be close to good medical facilities, but shopping isn't important at all.
We want to move somewhere inexpensive that's green, pretty, and peaceful, maybe somewhere in TN, NC, or WA? I don't want to pay the property taxes in OR so that's out. I appreciate any advice, it's hard to figure out which smaller towns are nice just by googling! Additional Details Thank you so much to all for the great responses! That was not only fast, but it's really nice to know that people are willing to take their time to help out - it will be hard to choose a best answer! |

I wouldn't leave home or find a home without this particular resource!!!
A lot of demographic information available essentially, all you need is the zip code or the name of any place in the US and you will be well informed.
I used this site to help me recently purchase 2 homes, 1 in FL & the other on the Eastern Shore of Delmarva.
Good luck and best wishes with BESTPLACES.NET :) |

I would seriously suggest that you check out North Carolina. Dollar for dollar, you get a lot more real estate for your money than in most other states, and the cost of living is relatively low compared to other states. If you live in a smaller town right outside of a larger area (look for towns right outside of Raleigh, Durham, Charlotte, and Greensboro, for example) you get the best of both worlds....small town prices, but with easy access to big city culture and hospitals. North Carolina is quickly becoming a leader in the health care industry, as well. Duke Hospital, Wake Forest Medical Center and the whole Research Triangle Park are fine examples of this.
In addition, if you live in central North Carolina, that puts you 3 hours or less (by car) from some of the most beautiful beaches AND some of the most beautiful mountains on the east coast. |

A great inexpensive place to live is Charlotte, NC. Not too far from the coast, nice weather, and a great city. You can live in the suburbs and it will be a quiet, simple town with wonderful medical facilities all around the area. (actually to be honest im not sure about the medical facilities, but i bet they are decent) But this town is great. |

Go to www.realtor.com
You can find out the prices of homes and the interest rates and even peek into the houses for sale to see if you like them...
They have a lot of information for anyone looking to relocate.
If you want demographics and financial statictics or just neighborhood information? Look in an atlas, and do an online zip code look up by county at the Us Post office website, and then plug these numbers into the census bureau's website and it will give you all of the demographics you will need to determine what an area is like and its growth or decline potential.
Good luck!
I have some opinions too on where the best places are BUT... My suggestion is for you to still go to the census bureau first because some areas seem nice now, because they are inexpensive... But there is usually a reason for that you can't always see looking in from the outside. Things like no growth potenital Ect... If major corporations are not investing in an area to provide jobs. Eventually, they end up like areas of Texas with a sea of big beautiful homes on the market stupid cheap, but because of bankruptcy and repo... and no jobs to be found! Be careful! |

In or around the Goldsboro, N.C. area is nice. It's not a small town, but it's not huge either. It is about 1 1/2 hours from the coast and about 2 to 2 1/2 hours from the mountains. I live in Garner, N.C., which is 45 minutes away from Goldsboro. If you want cheeper, you can go another 15 minutes east and you will find yourself in LeGrange, N.C. It's as cheep as it gets. |

Try a small town around San Antonio, TX or Huntsville, AL. Both are cheap places to live, and have terrific hospitals. |

Amarillo, Texas is a pleasant, mid sized town. The town is well watered, although the surrounding countryside is dry. People there are friendly, traffic moves well. The community offers culture, all essential shopping, good healthcare, and a reasonable cost of living. Not exactly TN, NC, or WA, but give it a look. You will be pleasantly surprised! (I have spent some time in TN, in rural areas, and found the people to be very closed to outsiders, making it an inexpensive, but lonely, place to live. Can't speak to WA or NC from personal experience...)
Small town life (population less than 1500) can be inexpensive, but keep in mind that you will always be a newcomer, and this can be hard. If you have never lived in a true small town, make sure it is what you really want. Another option you might consider is to live on a farm. In my personal experience, the townfolk treat newcomer farmers with a bit more respect than they do those who would be "townies". Keep in mind your home business may suffer in rural communities due to poor internet access and lack of local customers. Enjoy your quest! |

Several small towns around Nashville, Tennesse should be seriously considered. In some kind of poll I saw on TV recently, Nashville was rated one of the Top 5 places in America to live......many people are moving there because the Quality of Life is great.
