i would contact your local red cross.

Most charities are not going to be interested because of the transportation costs. Don't ask the Red Cross--- they only accept cash, or goods in large quantity. That's because they work with so very many people; they do not have a large number of administrators as compared to other charities, and they simply don't have the staff required to make a "one of" donation, and I would imagine when working with that many needy folks, there's no fair way to decide who would get it.

Try your local fire department; fire departments are like one big community where lots of firemen and women all over the country all know each other. They may be able to work something out with a fire department in the hurricane area, where the firemen in both areas "pass the boot" to raise the transportation money and select the family who will get it.

Also consider selling/raffling the mobile home and donating the cash.

The Red Cross has reached its limit for hurricane relief donations, so they are referring people to the US Freedom Corp, and the US Freedom Corp is referring people with goods to donate to National Emergency Resource Registry. Below is the link to the NERR. As other people have mentioned, mobile homes may not be desired in a below sea level potential hurricane location. Mobile homes tend to fall apart quickly in a Katrina level hurricane, for example. But it is worth asking!!!

They could probably do more with the money you could raise by auctioning/raffling it off. It would also solve the transportation thing...

I can see that your good intention will not be appreciated by people who are handling the donation because they are not willing to move your mobile home. Why don't you give it to the organization who really needs it and appreciate your effort like cancer society. They will pick it up and give you the receipt.

Iron Rider
Don't, they have got thousands down there they can't do anything with right now.

Contact your local American Red Cross. And, see if there is anything you can do. If your willing to donate it to someone that lost their home, you wouldn't want money for taking it to them.

there are hundreds of mobile homes down there - the problem is that they cannot be placed in areas below sea level and majority of the new orleans area is below sea level. there are organizations all over the country that accept cars and trailors as donations and such. why not donate to them - they will even come get it so you do not have to pay the $2000 in gas to drive it to LA

susuze2000
do a raffle and raffle tickets for a dollar or so apiece....this will help with moving expenses..

Red Cross is always the best.....you know for sure they go out into the ravaged areas and help.....some of the others sell what you donate and you never know where the money actually goes.
