Is 1000 sq ft a good size house for a family of 4?

1000 sq ft is certainly adequate. I don't think it is a "good size" but if it is what you can afford you can make do. It also depends on the floor plan. I have seen 1000 sq. foot homes that have utility/laundry rooms of 100 sq. feet. That reduces the living area to 900 sq. feet. It also depends on whether it has a usable basement. As basements are not included in sq. footage, there may be an additional 1000 sq. ft. of usable space. This is particularly good if there is, as often is the case, an additional bedroom and family room in the basement.

A house that is only 1,000 sf sounds like it would be too small for a family of 4 to live comfortably. You're probably looking at 2 decent sized bedrooms (or maybe 3 very, very small ones). If there's an unfinished basement, though, you could finish it and essentially double your living area.

You may want to consider something that is at least 1,300 to 1,500 sf so that you'll have enough room.

I grew up in a 968 sq ft house within a family of 5. It was adequate, but that was 25 years ago. By today's standards, it's a little small. But it really is a matter of personal choice.

1000 square feet is small, but doable. Depending on the ages of the kids, mostly you'll have trouble finding adequate storage for toys and baby thing.. if the bedrooms are small, realize that you'll mostly only be sleeping there. the other rooms should be big enough to allow for free movement.. you can do it.. I did!

It depends on the way of life ! but generally it's enough !

I don't think so. I live in an apartment that is 1248 sq feet and we have 2 bathrooms and 2 bedrooms. It is me, my daughter and husband. I think it is just enough space. I could not imagine a smaller place and an extra person

No. That's pretty small for 4 people. I lived in a 1100 sq ft with total of 3 and it was crowded.

I_Love_McRedneck
It really depends on the layout of the house, how large the rooms are & how much furniture/toys you have. The more *stuff* in a house, the smaller it feels.

That is the size of my master bedroom.

I don't think I could live in that small of a space, but it is what you are used to. Many families in the world live in smaller homes then that.
