Is 25 dollars a week too much for supposed rent?
I want your opinion on this, for mine is most obvious. The person who is being billed this is an 18 year old, trying to balance her junior year in high school and a job at sonic, which she just got fired from.

woo! thanks for the info guys. im liking all of these answers.

Who is charging this?
I hope it is not a parent. A parent should not charge rent until a child is out of high school OR is working full time. (or if the kid is a bum and not working or going to school) The duty of the family is to provide food and shelter until a child is 18 AND finished with high school. I understand that some will charge rent starting at age 18, and that would be TOTALLY appropriate...EXCEPT for the fact that this 18 year old has not completed high school yet. If the student were in college or a drop out working full time, this would be a perfectly appropriate amount for rent.
Any other situation, 25 a week is a HUGE BARGAIN for rent, especially if utilities are included.

That's good considering the cost of rent these days. Also it depends! is it a room, house, or apartment? a part time job will pay for it.

There's nothing wrong with a teen paying room and board to her parents. The exact amount, however, should be determined as a percent of her earnings. It's hard to know if $25 is too much or too little unless you know what she's making in the first place. And, of course, if she got fired, she shouldn't have to be paying anything until she resumes work. Provided that she's making an honest attempt to get another job.

I don't think that's too much at all. I think it's pretty reasonable. Obviously there will have to be exceptions if she's out of work--but she has to be making an effort to get another job.

Who is charging this "supposed rent"? Parents? Parents are responsible for their child until that child completes high school and has sufficient education to get a full-time job, or is at least 18 and dropped out of school. A junior in high school cannot be self-supporting, part-time job or no.

As for "supposed rent," the market rate for a room including utilities varies widely around the country, but will be at least $100/week, up to $300/week in major cities and high-cost areas. Note that market rents for a room by the week can well exceed take-home pay from a full-time job at pay rates of up to $10/hr.

I think $25 is a reasonable amt. THese days lots of parents fail to teach their kids what real responsability is. Maybe they should lay off until the teen gets another job, but then again in the real world, a landlord would'nt look the other way and give free rent until that person can get a job, they wouldn't care, they would still want their money. that is something to think about too

As a high school student back in the 70's and working part time I was paying that much so no not unreasonable.

from her parents?
well...i'm going to ASSUME that your parents are just trying to teach you about the real world, and are actual caring people who r not trying to freeload.
and its not like they are charging $300 a week.

i really think that your situation sucks and you should save money and u should have $100 in ur savings at all times

i'm sry, but IDK what else to say

$25 a week is actually not bad, i mean think about all they did for you!
but, you are going through a lot too

Oh it's me!
18 and a junior? why did she get fired from Sonic? Sounds like the parents are trying to teach her something about life so she'll get motivated to do something about the road she's heading.
