Tracy L | Is 48 to old to start a new career? |
My mom is 48 and does daycare but she is tired of it and wants to do something else. She never earned a GED because she moved out when she was young because of abuse. How can she get another job, to earn a new skill lets say, and keep her job to pay her bills while she looks for another career. She thinks she is too old to start a new career, I told her 48 is still young. Am I wrong? |

If she does nothing, how old will she be in five years?
She must go for this |

48 is not too old. With Social Security the way it is she will still have to work until she is about 70 anyway. Have her go to the local community college and speak to a career counselor. Most community colleges have classes to help people study for their GED, After she has that there are lots of things she could study for that would earn her a certificate in a field. The thing I thought of first for your mom was a CNA. Many nursing homes will pay for you to take the classes while you work there. The pay starts out at about $10 an hour and you can work a variety of shifts. with her background in child care she could also go for an associates degree in early childhood and get a job in a child care center, although the pay is pretty low. Please encourage your mom, she needs your support right now!!! Good luck. |

48 is never too old. Tell her to consider getting her GED and going to a Technical College. She can get out of school quickly and start earning money. |

She's really not too old, but the only problem out there is that the job market is overly biased towards the young. It may be difficult also because she lacks in professional experience. But where there is a will, there is a way. Perhaps you should sit with her and realistically shortlist the possible areas of employment she may take up. She may look into avenues of developing small entrepreneurship skills. |

better late than never... it's never too late to learn. If you the desire and the passion you can do anything ...so yaa she should start. I had this 68yr old lady in my class and yaa it took her little more time with certain things but she was hard-working and i thought she was good..yaa she should start...and no you are not wrong. |

It may be hard, but why limit yourself because of your age? Keep encouraging her. |

Never too old to change careers. There are many options wit online schooing. It is so easy to get a degree online these day, look into devry university, ashworth college, college of pheonix... also many colleges offer night classes. |

Clearly, she needs to get her GED conquered first, night classes will be the best way to prepare. Then, if it's a new skill set she needs, she will need to educate herself. Again, night classes or computer courses. She may have a good 20 working years ahead of her if she ends up in a career she loves. Good luck Mom!! |

It's really quite common these days to start a new career in your 40's or 50's. Education is going to be the limiting factor, not age; I would suggest going to night school to get a GED then perhaps look for a 9-month vocational training program. |

Knowledge is good.

Of course not. You're never too old to start something new.
Grandma Moses started a career in art in her late 70's. She was very successful at it for over 20 years. |

Some national and local women's organizations have help for this very situation. Sometimes they will help with taking a class to acquire a new skill or GED. But most importantly they offer counseling and supportive services for this type of life-transitioning.
Your mom needs help with the "you can do it" attitude, and practical support to make it happen. But it is very possible, I've seen it done many times. |
