Is a landlord required to install phone jack?
I moved into a house that was remodeled. The house does not have ANY phone jacks installed. Does the landlord have to install at least one phone jack? I'm in VA. I asked him and he said they don't install phone jacks. Verizon charges almost $100 per jack.

Additional Details
No wiring or box either! I have to pay for all of that?

Landlord
We have to provide one in the house, for a land line phone, in CA. It surprises me that they would not be required everywhere, as a phone is a very basic safety requirement.

Check local laws, but I believe he is required to provide ONE working phone jack. But if there is a working box in the basement it's not hard to do yourself.

there is no requirement to install phone jacks. they are not essential, especially in our day of cell phones and wireless internet. if you want to install a phone jack you'll need to get written permission from your landlord. i would then check with a couple local handymen and see what they would charge (usually much less than a Verizon technician).

acermill
There is no requirement for a landlord to provide phone jacks, or even a phone line. Simply have ONE jack installed and get yourself a wireless phone system which has multiple handsets available from that one phone jack.

no.not at all

No, not required.

NOPE.
Unless your lease provides it. READ lease carefully and see what it says about utilities and suchlike. Many tenants are using only cells nowadays.
You can get others to do do it cheaper than Verizon, like Illinois Bob, local companies.

No. And to have it installed, you will need your landlord's permission. For the company to install it, you'll need proof of that permission. In addition to that, you'll have to pay for it and honor any contract you sign regarding the service. Good Luck!

no, the landlord is not obliged to do so.
however, you may want to consider negotiating your rent with the landlord.

WALTER F
no,you have to,or have it done,

I would assume he has to have 1 jack for you. I would check with your local laws.

I know in MA, they are not required to install phone jacks...check with your state's laws on the internet regarding landlord/tenant matters

pixidoas243w
if you want to use a landline then your going to have to go threw your phone company, that's not the landlords responsibility

Check VA laws in NY State the LL is required to provide 1 functioning phone jack, if the tenant needs one. A lot of my recent tenants have gotten their phone with cable , and although as a tenant I installed my own extensions for cable , phone and data, as a landlord, I insist that I either do the installation myself or specifically approve and supervise any new or modifications to the existing installations. (After lots of cable holes and 2 unauthorized Satellite dishes bolted onto the roof)
