Is housing from habitat for humanity given free to the needy people?

Habitat actually partners with a family in need, to help their housing costs become 30-35% of their income means, versus more such as 45%. This enables them to hopefully get out of the cycle of poverty. They actually buy the house, with no profit, no interest mortgage. The houses are cheaper, simply because volunteers build and donated/cheaper building materials. The family is required to volunteer 400 hours of their time with the volunteers. This is known as "sweat equity." They must also haev some financial means to pay the low cost mortgage, and a proven history of responsibility. Not perfect credit, but def a good reference showing they are resposinble. Best of all- Habitat is a HAND UP not a HAND OUT!! :)

Also- at my affiliate where I work.. a homeowner does not *promise* to fulfill their hours. They fulfill their hours before their house is built, or they have to pay $10/hr for every hour that is not fulfilled within a yr. It is not a promise, but a contract. It truly is a wonderful program.

It is by no means given. In order to get a house from Habitat for Humanity, applicants must first qualify. Once they qualify, they have to spend so many hours helping build another HFH house, and so many hours building their own, and then so many hours on another house. So, the people that benefit from it, help others to benefit from it as well.

justwannaknow
the first two were correct, but they left out a very important detail: the people who get habitat homes pay a mortgage on their property also.

Every-ones answers about sweat equity is correct... You do have to qualify for the program... You do have to show ability to repay.. Many hours of work, I thought the major draw back about this program is that you don't have any choice in where you end up living.. A lot of these properties that are donated or purchased by the program are in less then desirable neighborhoods. So you could be living in the same place for years with your kids in school there and when your number comes up on the list for the next house to be built it could be on the other side of the county you live in. Could be miles away. If you don't take it then onto the next family on the list who qualifies. They will let you find a property and buy it or get someone to donate it... but still no guarantee that you will get it. I read all the info about this program & talked to someone from their office. No. Those folks getting that home MUST do what is known as "sweat equity".

In other words they promise to not only help with the home they are going to live in, BUT they must promise to do some of the work on the next home and/or on the homes others will occupy before them AND after they move into their new home.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Yes, that is my real last name!

they have to put in a certain number of hours building homes for other people before they can qualify for a house. Then i think they have to put in a certain number of hours building their own house.

I actually helped to build a habitat for humanity house and from what I learned in order to receive a house they had to put in so many hours of labor on their own house and on anther house. The houses are built from donated materials but some jobs must be contracted out like electrical and plumbing and not all of the material are always donated. So the owner of the house has to pay for those cost which after it is all said and done is next to nothing and they have 30years to pay that off with small monthly payments. This is how I'm pretty sure it works in the USA
I don't know how it works over seas

Actually the system is flawed severely. I work with many low income renters. Low verifiable income that is.

My last renter who received a Habitat house had a 1 year old Lincoln Navigator in the driveway, that she bought new and the nicest furniture I had seen in a while.

She deliberately took jobs that would keep her money off the books, so she could get the house.

President Carter came here to Jacksonville, FL. and oversaw a 100 home project that went up in 14 days.

Now the homeowners are suing Habitat becomes the homes are crap and now they find out the land it was built on was at one time a waste dump.

No, the family pays for supplies only,on a loan, fabulous help for the needy. Families submit their letters of why they should be choosen..
