Is it a stupid idea to slowly start buying small things for your future home to save for when you buy it?
My guy and I are starting out together with a little bit, but we would like to soon get a home together, and I have always wondered if starting my own little hopechest would bve a good idea, getting the smaller things and having them ready for our home, forking away little chunks to items so that it doesnt bog us down at once, has anoyone ever done this and can tell me some of the items they bought and saved, and do they feel it was or would be a good idea? Thank you in advance for all of your answers!

I think that is a good idea but you also need to look at realistically how long it will take as to when you will be getting your home. I say this out of experience. I did the very thing you talked about, and by the time I was able to buy my first home, many of my tastes had changed, there were better items more well suited, technology had changed so many items had to be replaced.

Your tastes could change, technology can change, your desires for home decoration could change, smells you like now, you may no longer like when you do buy your home. These are all things to take into consideration.

Another thing to think of, you can also have a house warming party, in which you let your guests know that since you are just starting out, anything they would like to contribute to your new home would be greatly appreciated. (GIFT CARDS ARE AWESOME, and just about everybody has them from Sears, Kmart, Walmart, Pier One, JcPenney, Lowes, Home Depot, etc) All depending on your tastes

Things that I can recommend are things for the following areas:

Kitchen:
kitchen mitts
decorative towels (as long as you know the theme you want and plan to keep it)
basic kitchen towels
simple dish sets
plastic containers
bakeware (cookie sheets, muffin pans, measuring cups, measuring spoons, etc)
Knife set

Bathroom:
bath towels,
bath mats
decor (as long as you know it's something you will want for years so as to not worry about changing it later)

Guest Room (if you will have one):
bedding,
guest towels,
knick knacks and decor as that is the one place you will probably not change too much as it is set aside for your guests

cleaning sponges
cleaning caddy
mop
broom
dustpan
rubber gloves

wicker baskets also make great storage and also give a creative look when first starting out.

also, clear view storage containers for things such as bedding that you may store so as to prevent moths or mold, etc from getting to towels, bedding, linens, etc

I would also think of stocking up on different size photo frames and pack them in plastic containers as well with bubble wrap.

Sorry if I seem like I am rambling: former military brat, former military and former military spouse now married to someone who trains the military, so I have lots of life experience with moves and houses and homemaking.

I would rather take all that money I would be spending on the small things and save it for the down payment on the house. If you spend $2000 on a bunch of little things for the new house, that's 2k less you have for a down payment.

For a $100,000 with a 80/90/95% loan the down payment would be 20k/10/5k. So saying your credit score is over 600, you should be able to get the 95% loan. The 5k down payment hurts when you haven't saved anything for it. Now if you took the money you spent on all the little odds and ends and put that towards the down payment. It makes it a lot easier to have a cushion when you actually find the house you want.

Good luck!

Not stupid, but., the things you buy may not fit your house, AND, you will need every cent possible to make the downpayment and closing.

so keep the little things small and few, and mainly save for the downpayment. bigger downpayment also makes for better loan conditions.

Mimi
I would save the money for the down payment of the house.

Hans
not at all, i think you should do it to keep your spirit alive to have your own house.

Yes it's a great idea....I started one when I was 16. Purchase things that you will need plus last by being boxed up. I would stay away from a color theme because your tastes will change. Don't buy items that will expire like batteries.

extension cords
light bulbs
glasses
set of dishes
silverware
pots & pans
bottle opener
coffee pot
plastic containers
strainer

Go through your mothers house and make a list of things she has. As it gets closer to the time you'll move in together start buying spices, sheets, towels, batteries, soap, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, plus staples like sugar, flour, cereal, & what ever you want. Spending money a little at a time really helps with the budget.

You can get alot of things at the dollar store. This will be fun and exciting for you. Good Luck!

A few items are not a bad idea, but for the most part it's probably better to save your money for all the hidden expenses you'll have once you move in. Also, once you are in your house you'll probably want some different things that you are buying now. In the end it won't really save you any money and will just be more crap you have to move.

It's nice to move into an empty house, that you can turn into a Home!

Good luck!! And Congrat's!

I think it is a good idea for some items. If it is a great clearance deal or something you find at a tag sale, buy it.

But if you are out furnishing your future house at the mall on Sunday with money you could be saving for your downpayment, it is a terrible idea. Make sure you are squirreling away everything you can to get yourself in a great financial position to buy. Keep your debts down, your credit score up and save save save.

Good luck to you.

I don't think it's a stupid idea at all. In fact, that is exactly what I started doing. Just be careful of things that you may change your mind on because of colors or styles.
By doing this you will be able to take advantage of some great deals on items when they are on sale or clearance.
You may want to keep a small notebook with a list of items you do purchase as well as a wish list of items you will need. This will help later when you try to remember what you have and what you don't.
GOOD LUCK to you and your boyfriend!!

I love your idea and I can just FEEL your enthusiasm for buying your first home!

Take care that you don't spend too much money on THINGS for the home you don't have....spend a little more time saving money for your down payment so you can GET that home! While you might be saving money by catching some bargains, the money could be better utilized as down payment monies for your home. The longer you wait to buy, the greater the chances are that you will pay a higher interest rate. If the rates climb higher than your spending ability, you may not HAVE a home.

Better to buy the home now and not take a chance on the interest rates. Whatever you saved by hitting the yard sales could be easily eaten up by higher mortgage payments.

Have a house warming party!!!!!
