Is it better to live on the first floor or the second?
I'm going to be renting an apartment soon and I'm trying to decide if I want to live on the first floor or second. I've lived on the second floor before but not the first. What I didn't like living on the second floor was having to haul everything up the stairs. So, I'm thinking I might try a first floor apartment. But, I'm worried about privacy, safety, and people above me.

What do you think?

The first floor is a lot easier especially when it comes to moving in your furniture and hauling in groceries! that way you don't have to lug them up a flight of stairs!

I personally think the 2nd floor option is always the best - even though it means hauling everything up the stairs.

We had the noisiest neighbors above us for over a year. The little daughter ran constantly at all hours of the day and night. The parents could have cared less about our complaints. Yes, you do have to lug things in and out up and down steps but for the reasons YOU mentioned, I'd go with the second floor if I had to do it over again.

Having lived on the 1st floor in three different apartment complexes, I have to say I would not do it again if I had a choice. Yeah, hauling stuff up the stairs when you move in/out is a real pain, but that's 2 days out of the hundreds you'll be spending there. On the first floor, we have been harassed by teenage kids, we can't keep our blinds open, and we're always worried about the possibility of a break-in. We can't use our patio for storage or relaxing. We also constantly hear the people above us thumping around.

So... facing all of that versus spending 2 days awkwardly shoving stuff up or down staircases... you decide.

Each has its advantages and disadvantages, as many have pointed out here.

What I always suggest is a Pros and Cons list. Take a piece of paper, draw a line top to bottom, put Pro on one column, Con on the other and start filling it in. When you are done, take a look at what you have and the answer for you should be clear.

2nd floor is better. My friend lives in the same apt complex as me, and she's on the first. We can hear the neighbors above her walking and it sounds like "running with the bulls".

I know people can get in anywhere, but my police dept indicated that fewer break-ins occur on 2nd floors due to the obvious inconvenience.

As far not wanting to "haul" stuff up to the second floor. Girl get your exercise. We Americans need to keep on moving. I want to climb the steps.

1st floor is most suitable.

2nd floor, think of stairs as exercise.

2nd floor in my opinion is your best option.

Then you do NOT have to worry about someone walking around at all hours of the night ( a real possibility)

I've lived on both the first and second floor.

The fact that you have NOT lived on the first floor means for whatever reason you are very lucky.

I can answer your Q w/ a series of Qs:
How many steps do you want to drag and wrestle w/ furniture getting in and out?

How many steps do you want to carry groceries?

How many steps do you want to carry laundry?

YOU are THE ONLY person who can answer those. As for me: I prefer as few steps as possible.

Thanks for asking your Q! I enjoyed answering it!

Yes, that is my real last name!
