Is it illegal to live in your car? UK?
I've been reading a lot about Americans going into foreclosure and resorting to living in their car. I've been thinking about this and though it would be a good way to save up some money. Where would you be allowed to park in th uk legally?

This is where I got most of the info. I enjoy camping so that's not an issue.

For the toilet I was thinking supermarkets as I'll have to buy food every two days anyway and keep it in the cooler box. For showers I was thinking the local swimming baths.

I pay for my car tax, insurance etc. anyway on top of my rent and council tax, so I'd save a fortune.

I lived in my car for a couple of months after I left a flat and found I didn't have enough money to get a new one. It was pretty difficult to find somewhere to stay overnight. You're not allowed to stay in car parks and you really don't want to stay anywhere too public but nowhere too secluded where a parked car will attract attention. I was woken by the police about 1o'clock one morning who breathalised me as I was technically in charge of the vehicle, I was okay on that but did get done for the bag of weed I'd left on the dashboard(rookie mistake). Also, I did this in the spring/summer and it got really cold so I wouldn't recommend doing it at this time of year. Got to say though that it wasn't entirely unenjoyable- a bit like camping.

Come on, be realistic. When i went out this morning at 0630 my car was covered in ice and there was a thin skim of it on the inside of the windows as well. Just what are you going to do after eating your meal every night, sit huddled up, freezing cold, your clothes getting damp.

A more realistic way if you are that desparate to save money would be to buy a small old caravan - you can pick up a road worthy one for under 500 on ebay. Get a camp site directory and stay at a variety of sites a couple of weeks at a time. You would have the site toilet block, quite possibly laundry facilities, you could get a little TV and have a comfortable bed. No Council Tax, water rates etc etc.

It is illegal. And probably very very unpleasant. is it really worth it unless you absolutely have no other option?

No, it isnt illegal but you still need road tax (if kept on a public road), insurance and current MOT. This is because all vehicles that are are being used or have the potential to be used have to comply with current law. Basically the purpose of a vehicle is for transportation and you are technically in charge of that vehicle so would have to move it if it was causing an obstruction or the like by the Police.

It is not illegal to live in your car depending on where it is parked. If its on your own land or where you have permission to park then that's OK. But on the public highway no you cant.

Gypsy Girl
People park their cars at rest stops, store parking lots and other places like that. It's usually not legal though and those people are constantly being chased away by security guards and police.

But, if you are going to do it, where will you shower? How will you eat? How will you sleep? What will you do with your belongings while you are living in your car?

Paul
Is it illegal - yes i think it is.
For example the centre on London. You only pay for parking between approx 8am and 7pm so you can park there.
What you will do with regards to the toilet and washing i dont know.

Ello Guvna
Its illegal to sleep in your car on public streets, but there are plenty of laybys and stopover points on motorways where you can.
