Is it leagal to share an apartment with someone that is just your roomate and not a part of your family?

Generally, yes. However, some states have exceptions to this on the books, most of which are antiquated. Some states limit the number of unmarried, unrelated woman who can live together (so they can't be running a brothel). In some states, a man and a woman who aren't married or related can't live together, because it's illegal to "live in sin". Honestly though, I really can't see anyone hassling you over this.

Usually that is not illegal unless in fact it is specifically stated in your lease that you cannot do so.

yes, very. however, some leases may not allow a roommate without approval, whether they're your family or not.

Mildred S
yes it should be legal , but you can't sublet . you need both names on the lease.

Yeah...hence the term room mate

Most places, yes. There can be restrictions on how many unrelated people can live the same place - this varies by local ordinance.

There is no such thing as illegal or legal; to share an apartment with someone. Landlords make the rules, and what they say goes (thats just the way it works). I think your getting this question mixed up a bit. It is absolutely okay for ANYONE to stay with you, provided that YOU agree to having them stay over AND that so does your landlord/property manager! Some property managers don't care, however; most do. In fact, when or if you sign the contract to rent you will most likely see a section with the words "subletting". Subletting means that you are bypassing your managers decision (if they even have one) about letting someone else live in your apartment. A good example of this is somewhat what your asking. Weather Family or Friends, it does not matter. They must be ON the lease and go through all the background and history checks you did/will. IF they are not on your lease, and you decide to let them live (to help pay your rent or not) there without letting your landlord know this you fall into the category of subletting. This type of action will most likely get you immediately kicked out right away. Remember, it does not matter if it's a friend or family... sharing your apartment is not "illegal" - provided that you have told your landlord. They want to know who's living in the apartment. If you lie, and they find out..you'll be subject to pack-up and find another home immediately. While some laws in a few states may have certain limits on a number of unrelated people in your home, it certainly does not sound like you are trying to have 3-4 of your buddies live with you so this does not apply to your matter.

Of course it is. How do you think college students all live in the same apartment together splitting rent among them. I have several friends who live with roommates.

Yes, as long as you both pay or work something out so the whole rent is paid on time. If one of the people is a minor it wouldn't be legal for that person to pay the rent and be on the lease.

Yep
