Yes...it's their property. Having a criminal record does not fall into the category of discrimination. Criminals..even former ones...are not a protected class and can be denied many things because of their past record.

The landlord can freely choose who he/she wants to rent the apartment to.
The only exception to this (assuming your in the USA) is the landlord can not deny you solely on the basis of your race, color or creed.

Yes! I would ask them that if you furnished proof of good reliable references if they would give you a second chance to apply. If you could then get the names of some higher ups...clergy...local government official to name a few...then could they let you in?

Depends on what it was for in my book. If its for a major crime, you arent getting in my door. If its misdemeanor, it depends on what it was. Its up to the landlord as he has a responsiblilty to keep his other tenants as safe as he can.

Yes. Unless the conviction has been expunged, or sealed, then any criminal activity can be considered you for a loan, rental, employment, or lease agreement. However I am surprised they performed a check that far back into your history.
