audrinahilton | Is it legal for apartment places to charge different rent to different people in the same apartments? |
We have 5 girls living here and we each pay $300 per month, the people below us are paying $275 each per month for the EXACT same apartment... we moved in on the same date and it really just doesn't seem fair. |

It may not seem fair, but it is quite legal. Maybe the downstairs neighbors negotiated a different amount. Rentals are part of the free market so the landlord could charge you hundreds more than everyone else if you agree to pay it. |

Yup! You agreed to the amount, you gotta pay it. There's no "fair" way about it. They can charge you whatever they feel like. |

The landlord has the right to charge whatever he wants for his property, there's nothing illegal about it.
It is not unusual for different apartments in the same unit to have different rental rates ~ it all depends on the view, access to the parking garages, access to the pool, upstairs vs downstairs, and proximity to a busy street. The landlord may have had to sweeten to deal for the renters beneath you on account of the noise that 5 occupants would generate. |

Yes, as long as the reason isn't discriminatory, they can charge whatever you are willing to sign a lease for. Discriminatory would be, for example, if they charged black families more per month than white families, only because of their race - that would not be legal. |

Think about it this way: If you and I went to the same car dealership on the same day and bought identical cars - would we pay the same price? Probably not.
Both your leasing situation and the example above involve a number of variables and negotiation - so the resultant cost is seldom the same. Number of occupants, length of time the unit is/has been vacant, credit profiles of applicants, and so on can all affect the rental rate. In truth, $25 isn't a large variance. When your lease comes up for renewal, see if you can negotiate the same (or lower) rent for yourself as you will then have the advantage of a track record with the landlord. |

did they move in on rent specials? do you even have those where you live? some of the apartment complexes here in WI have rent specials so some people pay different rent than others. |

In high rise apartments rents are slightly lower on the lower floors, the higher in the building the higher the rent.
Rents are based on market demand. You are in the wrong country if you think your personal circumstances will determine your rent. |

Yes its legal and fair.
I bet the other people are not 5 girls.
I also bet that you get electric or water included in the rent.
If both are correct, then 5 people cost more then a couple./ |

The answer is NO IF all things are the same... which generally the landlord will say they are not. For example: some units will rent for a different price depending on location or how long they have been on the market. |
