I live in a college apartment complex and they are raising our rent by $15/month starting in march. My lease runs from Aug 2007 to May 2008, can they up my rent even though my lease states that i make 10 monthly installments of $425?
also, they sent a letter to my parents at home, not to me, and I am the one who pays the rent. Seeing as I never recieved a notice, can I pay the 425 for march and not be penalized?
This apartment complex is retarded in everything they do, i'm not living here next yr because of all the problems i've had, but please let me know if this is possible.

in PA and they are apparently switching companies... but my parents said the letter didnt say who the new company is so idk who to make a check out to now anyways... but my problem is that they notified my parents and not me, the resident who lives a min from the clubhouse, not 3 hours |

Request a copy of your lease. Read this over completely to find out if increases are allowed within the term of your lease. Remember, non-payment is never acceptable-pay the amount you believe you owe. As far as them sending this request to your parents, are your parents co-signers? If so, they are within their legal rights to send a copy to your parents, if not, they have crossed a legal boundary of confidentiality. |

What state are you in?
Do you have a fixed-year lease or a month to month lease. If m-t-m, then yes. A fixed-year lease I would say no, but you should look up the landlord/tenant law for your state. |

They can increase rent but they cant collect the new rent until the old lease is up and the new lease is written.
You should take a look at your lease just to make sure youre solid and show a copy of it to the property manager.
You have rights as a tennent and the law is on your side provided that your lease is as you describe.

Go to your local housing authority and see if this is legal. Just because some stupid landlord is doing something doesn't make it legal. They can advise on your next steps. |

If your lease states your rent is $425 per month until May 2008, it CAN NOT be changed.
Pay the amount of rent the lease requires. If they try to evict you just show the judge the lease. |
