No, that's VERY illegal. But think about it, why would she do that?
I would suspect she is not declaring the rental income she is getting from you, so wants no "official" records of your legal address on file anywhere.
Get a PO Box, then find somewhere else to live... |

It's a federal offense to tamper with someone else's mail. Call the post office and talk to the postmaster, and find out about getting a separate mailbox put up for you with 1/2 after the address or 'unit2' or something. That way if she touches your mail, she can be in some serious trouble.
I would also seriously think about moving ASAP. What a b*tch. |

No, It's Illegal and you can sue them.
Is tampering with mail and she can go to jail.
Also renting a basement is illegal/ I think you should check on that. |

sounds like she is trying to hide the fact that she is renting out her basement! call legal-aide and check out your rights, as they differ from state to state and sometimes city to city. if it turns out she is within her rights to deny you mail...rent a post office box. then you can still get your mail no matter where you live! |

I suggest a P.O. Box but if you are paying rent, its a FEDERAL offense, from your landlord keeping it from you. |

Legally no one can hold your mail, it's a federal offense. She is probably worried because it's an illegal apartment and getting mail is a major red flag. She should of told you that your going to need a p.o box. She can because it's an illegal apartment. Best bet, get a p.o box. Bargain ask her to take $20 or something off rent to cover the p.o box since she didn't state that information when you moved there. |

No that is completely illegal. You should take legal action. |

She is renting out her basement, Just like renting out a room.
Ask her if it would be possible to put a new mailbox someplace on the side and call it address 1/2.
So when you have mail delivered they are delivering it to 5555 1/2. This is done all the time. |

it is a federal offense for your landlord to do anything with your mail other than give it to you..... i would call the post office or someone who can help you straighten her out!
also, look into getting a P.O. box at the post office. less hassle for you and you can add that as a mailing address on your resume.
good luck! |

if you signed a lease and it isnt addressed in the lease then no she cannot keep you from getting mail. That is your address too and legally her sending it back is mail fraud. But if I were you I would just get a PO box. Is she allowed to have you live there? There must be a reason for her doing this? |

do you have a lease? is there something on your lease that says you can't have mail there? if it's your legal residence, i don't see how you COULDN'T have mail sent there. she sounds nuts.
but i would find out what your city's tenant/landlord rights and regulations say. It would also tell you if your basement apartment isn't legal and how you can get out of the lease.
or just get a PO box. |

Talk to your local postmaster. Tampering with the US mail is illegal. See if they deliver your items to that address. If it is not worth moving over by making your landlord angry, get a post office box and wish him or her a nice life... |

I'm pretty sure messing with your mail would be considered a federal crime. I would suggest you get two mail boxes and put your names on one so she doesn't have to deal with it. Other option is to get a PO box and put in a forward request so the post office forwards all your mail to the PO box instead of the house. |

Double check but my money is the place is an illegal unit, that is why she does not want mail delivered to her address
move out and contact the local zoning to be aware that she has an illegal unit in her basement |

yes, even if there is no permit for occupancy permit for the basement |

When you leased the unit, that became your legal residence where all your mail matters should be received. You can sue your landlord for disallowing you to receive your mail in your rented apartment. |

This is what I found for you in a Landlord/Tenant legal forum. Keep in mind this post is from someone in California, but I think this is pretty much the rule everywhere in the states.
"You have no RIGHT to mail delivery. It is a service and you can choose not to rent the property under such arrangements or rent a commercial box or get your mail at your work.
This is becoming more common where the USPS will not separate mail and the # of units is not sufficient for the USPS to install a "gang or multi-box pedistal". Your landlord does not want responsibility for accepting and delivering your mail....certainly his/her right."
As others have posted, I would take a look at your lease and consider getting a box off premises. Good luck to you! |

I don't know if it's possible to determine the legality of returning mail. However it is a federal crime to steal mail. Suggesting you would file charges if she doesn't allow you to receive you mail at the address is probably not going to bode over well with your living situation though. I suggest investing in a PO Box at your local post office if she continues to have a problem with it. This way you can receive all your mail without having to bother her. |

You should get a Post Office box and look into living somewhere else. She can't tamper with your mail, but if she doesn't want you to list her address I guess she has the right. |

It's illegal.....you can report it to the postmaster general. It is a federal offense.
The easiest way may be to get a PO Box. |

Get a PO box at the post office. Your land lord will have no access to your mail and can't send it back. |

tell her that you can have your mail sent to that address because it is your postal adress and that because you live there it is your right to get your post |

My landlord is doing the same, in fact I just found out they told me a totally non existent address for my apt! I was contacted by several businesses saying the address I gave them is NOT an address! This has screwed up my SS payments and all kinds of things! I need advice quick. These people told me after I moved in I was not allowed in the mailbox and if I got any mail they would bring it to me! I have gotten no mail in a month! Advice would be great! |
