Is it legal for the tenant to return landlord's mail back to sender?

Landlord tenant matters are governed by state law. What state do you live in?

In the UK sending the landlords mail back to the sender would be considered the responsible course (if the tenant did not know the landlords address - which would be unlikely as it is always included on the lease). You would then let the land lord know the action taken via the leasing agent etc. Other than that then forwarding the mail to the landlord would be the appropriate action. What is considered unlawful is interfering with the mail by way of opening it or disposing of it without letting the landlord know of its existence. But quite aside from the legal aspect there is the moral one. If you were to dispose of or in any way prevent the delivery of a piece of mail addressed to a landlord...what does that demonstrate in terms of your reliability to the landlord? Its his house, his mail. Youre only a temporary fixture and ultimately removable.

Under British law you have two choices. You can forward the mail to your landlords known address or return to sender.

It's illegal to interfere with the Royal Mail, so you can't hold onto it in hope it might be collected. Notable uses of drop addresses are the avoidance of bills and tax.

Notify your local sorting office and they will stop delivering it; that simple!

Unless you do not have an address for your landlord or a contact number for him to let him know you have mail for him, then I do'nt see what else you can do.Do try and contact him though, and ask him to arrange to have his mail redirected to save you the inconvenience. If you rent through an agency, give them the mail so they can foreward it on.

Well, if the mail is addressed to you, you can do whatever you want with it; however, if it is addressed to your landlord, as I suspect it is, he/she has jurisdiction over it and should send it back himself/herself. You'd probably get away with it, but it might not be legal.

Mail FROM the landlord or TO the landlord? You can refuse mail sent to you, but you have no business touching mail sent to another person - Unless it comes to your address in error.

ElectronProbabilityCloud
Nope, not illegal. Not very sporting though, unless you don't have your landlords address.

shih tzu lady
Would it not be easier to forward it on to him???? As long as you dont open it, you're not doing anything illegal. Put it in the mail box marked "return to sender."

bud68
If the tenant solely occupies the residence, yes. The landlord needs to make arrangements for the mail to be delivered to his/her residence.
