Is it natural for a tenant to hate thier landlord?
I owned a condo for a few years, a 3 bedroom and rented out the other 2 to about 8 people, most of whom were also in college as i was. The condo was furnished, and had very nice interior decorating as well as a state of the art home theater! And most of them hate me by the end of the lease! Iam a easy going guy and i get along with everyone, Not only that, i covered things like Cable/Internet/And most of the cleaning. I always got the feeling they hated me because they had to pay me their money. I was practically the same age as all of my tenants, early twenties, yet by the end of thier lease every one of them hates me! What is the deal!
Additional Details
When i said 8 people i meant over the years! Not @ once

.........My toilet is clogged", or " I think our share of the rent covers the mortage payment - this quote was used against me by 2 tenants" while i was being tag teamed....

simply enter their home with their permission
right then and there to confirm that "problem"
and I sure hope their rental payment contributes to your mortgage payments. Why is that a negative.

Since you have a tenant attitude problem,
why not interview all tenants monthly and
find out what they feel and why!

All behavioral attitudes can be analyzed and
some found to be "poor teasees" and others
will found to be "aren't all landlords out to
GET tenants?"

YOU might ask tenants "what do you wish me to do so that I appear more friendly and
helpful?" Many will politely ignore you.

Being a landlord is a very powerful position
and most landlords do not know how to
act. I had one who stated out by bringing
by flowers and doing landscaping and
in 6 mo, ignored everything. Thus, he started
out with a bang and fizzled.

WALK every property, with the tenan'ts
permission, every month. Fix everything
without being asked. When a tenant
has to ask, it is humiliating.

AND apologize for having to see their
private property. OR at least be humble.

Follow through at all times.

Also, ask how their families are and their
jobs and their health. These tenants
are a DEFACTO family.

Act accordingly.

Personally I think it is a part of human nature to reject authority. Just look at the appeal against the military. I know a lot of people who simply think the military or government is strict. After serving for 6 years it is almost opposite at times. Yes there are factors such as deployments, but during peacetime it is the best job to have because you are completely secure. Also I think it is the adult appeal. We we grow up we do not want anyone telling us what to do so what do we do when it happens..We reject them!

kareem.sickle
yes. most landlords are scumbags.

Do you think you acted a certian way or did something that made them act like they hated you? Did you expect things out of them that you weren't clear about when they signed the lease? Your behavior may have made them not like you. I don't know, you didn't give us enough info.

Well it totally depends on the tennant & landlord. However I think there is a natural distrust between the two. The first landlord I had was really nice and I liked her. She was this kind & generous 82yr old lady (Mrs. Bunker). But the landlord I have now is a total prick. It just depends on where you live.

It is not a natural thing, but some people do have resentment, especially if your age. I am 53, but have tenants same age, but they do not hate me. They tolerate the rules and deal with issues with me, but do not think there is any hate. One thing you have to be as a landlord is thick skinned. One day you are a jerk, the next day you are their best friend. The main think is to be consistented on your decisions. Nothing worse than a wishy-washy LL.

A good deal of this scenario relates back to the ole "have and have not's" syndrome --- or better phrased --- "us and them" !!
A great percentage of people view their own individual position in most affairs of life as being the one of rational, correct, and proper action -- because they are in the center OF their own rationale !! And, in most things that are closely affixed to each circumstance within these various factors (especially those things that affect the "rathers" that they have IN those matters) they harbor certain resentments and misunderstandings because those things run somewhat counter to the way they feel they SHOULD be having to deal with things !!

In the circumstance you have mentioned HERE --- these people are actually LIVING WITH the "control factor" that sets the rules OF their living circumstance -- and although they are paying to live there -- they can not live as freely as they would be if they were in a situation where the "control factor" was on the OUTSIDE OF their everyday envoirnment !! This is immediately more oppressive and restricting -- and in fairly short order they CAN start to feel as though they are getting the "short end of the deal" --- feeling as though they are being "monitored" WITHIN their "homelife" even though they are "paying for the priviledge" !! This -- can very easily set up an "advisarial" relationship in fairly quick order !!
This CAN be a much more "preceived" thing than actually exists --- or it CAN be very much a "reality" --- in either case --
it definitely becomes a relavant Factor within the relationship !!

You can not generalise the behaviour of the tenant that you have experienced, it varies from man to man. It is your fate to blame. It occurs, most of the cases by the supressive attitute of the land lords.

Yep, N so it is in revers. = ] He's to hate you as well. Let's all eat doughnuts.

If you had 8 tenants in "a few years" I would say that either there is a problem with the condo or with the living conditions, possibly you. Have you asked any of the tenants why they moved out? Maybe you need to be their "landlord' not their friend. Do not have any type of relationship with them more than a "hi and bye" in the hallways. Check references, maybe you are choosing your tenants poorly.

Jealousy.

Your job is to ignore such knuckleheads.

The ultimate revenge is living well.

"Go about your own business" and let the other people ***** an moan about how bad their life is.

There is a reason these people live paycheck to paycheck.

The Secret Movie deals with the subject better than anything out there.

As for you getting upset about idiots, 2 web sites I recommend.

http://www.AnewLife.org
http://www.ReleaseTechnique.com

Both will change your life for the better.

Being close to there age, you really have to draw a line in the sand. Your running a business, and have to conduct it accordingly....
Your the landlord, not their drinking buddy......
You dont have to explain your reasons, or expenses, but should unplug that toilet in a timely manner.......
