Is it not suspicious to buy a house with cash?
What will happen if I would purchase a house in England with cash? Is it suspicious? Will I have any problems in the future?
Additional Details
By cash I mean WITHOUT A MORTGAGE, not to pay with two suitcases of a paper cash....

I live in England since 2003 and it'd be my first home. Money came as wedding gifts, life savings, return on investment from abroad etc. Tax was paid only on the UK income though...

if you purchase a house with cash, they will secretly call the police and they'll start tailing you and Begin an extensive investigation into your background and source of income and you if you got something to hide then i suggest you don't even try it. There are many ways to buy a house,if you have cash...get a cashiers cheque or money order for the amount, you can also money transfer it to their company through installments coz if you walk to a small western union branch with E100,000, that also looks weird, you take a little at a time in cash and transfer it to the people selling the house....with 10 installments, that should be good,no trace,nothing....but on the other hand if you're a wealthy person and you don't have anything to hide then you're good to go,buy it with cash coz the police wont find anything on you.

the main problem is how you will carry the money around. it'd weigh a ton.
buying without a mortgage happens all the time though

lulu
it could be seen as money laundering - you would have to prove where you got the money from and provide ID ~ as long as you can prove both, then it shouldn't be a problem

Sure it's suspicious, but you're not doing anything illegal, right? haha! You're not very good at the "bad guy" thing, buddy! To me, what's really suspicious is this question. Hmm...

So long as you have the money in the bank and can account for it as you say there should be no problem. When my son bought his first house the money came from parents grandparents savings etc and he was fine.

It absolutely is suspicious and it is not recommended for your own safety as well.
You could pay through the bank which will also be a proof that you have given money to a certain individual. There are further reasons which if you contact a banking institution, will give you a list.

why not?

If you have the cash...go for it. How could you possibly get into trouble if you pay for the house up front in cash??? My parents have the cash to buy a house too and I wouldn't think it was suspicious. Just lucky.

No one questioned my relatives when they brought a house without a mortgage.Paid for with a bankers draft though a solictor. They were left an inhertiance, they never actually handled any 'cash',it was all bank transactions.
At lot of auction properties are cash sales, its not that unusal.

Butternut27
No, its not...bought some in the past this way...its a good way to negotiate a quick sale and discount...its a win - win situation

as far as i know, they will just require proof of source of cash, e.g. bank statements, earnings, savings accounts, pensions, etc... in other words, how come you got so much available cash...?

I MEAN IT WOULD COME OFF AS SUSPICIOUS TO THE AVERAGE JOE, BECAUSE MOST DON'T DO THAT, BUT IN REALITY MANY PEOPLE DO BUY THINGS COLD HARD CASH.

SO, I'D HAVE TO SAY NO TO BOTH QUESTIONS, AS LONG AS YOU HAVEN'T BEEN DOING ANYTHING ILLEGAL.

Many people buy homes without a mortgage. If it's all 'above board' and legal then there's nothing to worry about.
All financial institutions/solicitors/estate agents have a duty to report anyone they suspect of money laundering. If the funds are in the bank/building society, in accounts in your name then there shouldn't be a problem.
The problems do arise however should you turn up with a suitcase full of cash.... and beleive me, it does happen!!

In most countries, your name would probably be flagged as possible money launderer..

So you said CASH but you didn't actually mean CASH!

What is your reasoning for purchasing the home in England? If it is a vacation home and it "makes sense" and you can prove where your funds are coming from (ie. the sale of another home, home equity, stocks, inheritence, etc) I don't really see what's suspicious about it. People buy vacation and second homes all the time. Its all about a paper trail, otherwise, yes, it could look suspicious if you walk in with a briefcase full of cash.

FELIKS D.
Yes. The deed holder will report you to the bank...very suspicious. Thats a common way to launder money, you know. Good luck..

PS. In America, they would call the IRS

Why? is it drug money?!:P

They will probs search your police record and if you have a record for drugs or something they will know why you have bought with cash. Although if the police find out later on after you have bought the house in any use of money [cheque/cash etc] with what they believe is money from you selling drugs they can take the house off you because it could well be bought with drugs money and illegal money.

Merry Christmas x :)
