Is it possible to buy a house on benefits?
I have heard that it is possible to buy a house on benefits, is this true?
Additional Details
My rent is £825 per month. Housing benefit pays £700 of this leaving me a short fall of £125. My youngest child is 2 years old and has been having multiple operations. Until he is is 5 and at school i will be on benefits. So i have 3 years of paying (with help) rent , which i was told could start mo off towards owning my own home?

Most people won't even rent a house to anyone on benefits, can't see buying as an option.

Isnt there a rent to buy system in the UK?
or a shared ownership scheme?
these may help.

What do you mean by benefits. There are so many benefits if you buy a house. Or if you mean that you have to buy a house with so any particular benefits. May be getting goo rent or may be at a convenient place etc. Anyway now a days it is benefitial to buy a house. The price is increasing as skyrocket. So buy a house and get more and more benefits.

Sandee
No lender will supply you with enough money for a deposit so the answer is NO.

mypassions4life
If you mean housing assistance or some type of public assistance you cant use that to buy a house. If you need assistance like that to buy a house then you need to wait until you can afford it. There is much more financial expenses to homeownership than just paying a mortgage every month.

Specifically what benefits?

Vampire
no. the benefits hardly cover the cost of living let alone a mortgage. once upon a time people in receipt of DLA could have the money paid into mortgage accounts, but not any more.

Lisa
If the benefits relate to child support, alimony, or social security, then it is possible to buy a house with those factors being considered.

Usually benefits can't be garnished, therefore making it hard to collect if you don't pay your bills. I would think nope.

loanquest
In order to qualify, for example, for state-run first-time home buyer program you must demonstrate income sufficient to pay the mortgage and usual expenses. The income needs to be generated by you, not the state.

If you are getting monetary benefits from the state in lieu of employment you would not qualify. You must be employed (full-doc or stated income) or self-employed (stated income in many cases).

If you are thinking of disability benefits, as it was stated earlier, the state does not have that program any longer, at least not in the tri-state area (DC,MD,VA).
