public records will show what you paid for the house when you bought it - not what you actually owe. Go see for yourself or call the county tax recorders office. They'll confirm it for you. |

It may be available in public records as mortgages are recorded. This would tell someone how much you borrowed originally, but not what you currently owe.
You are not under any obligation to tell someone what you owe and it should not have any bearing on what your home is worth or what someone is willing to offer you.

It can be. I get solicitations every day to re-finance my mortgage, and the data comes from public records or from the credit bureaus. The public records will show that a lien exists; they may not show its size. |

yes it is public information. when you are selling your house they will do a title search that will show liens on the house or encumbrances |

Not public info. How much you paid for it is. How much it is worth for tax purposes is. How much you owe is none of their business. They will figure it out only at closing. A title search can only be done by an attorney. |

Some counties show the amount of your mortgage in addition to the purchase price. So if you bought a house for $150,000 and put down $30,000 on it, it would show a mortgage in the amount of $120,000. |

That is not public information! What you paid is, however I bought mine years ago and have added to it twice and they still list what I paid when I first bought it. |
