Is it really bad to have to tell your landlord you need 4 days to pay rent?
It sure feels like crap. Is it something most people have done? Should he sound as peeved as he sounds?
Additional Details
I've lived here a year, and we haven't had any problems.

i have done it. it makes you feel like crap but if you tell them upfront you may avoid late fees and what not

keshequa87
As a landlord, I'd rather be told by a tenant that they were going to be late than to wonder were their payment is and if it's coming at all. Communication is appreciated above all.

His mortgage is still due, so he is "peeved" because he has to take the money from his account to cover you.

But, it is not unusual at all. I would not say much if you called me to tell me you would be late. Some landlords charge late fees, but I tend not to, I rent mostly to families with children.

jayc28
It also depends on how long you've been living there. If you've lived there for 8 months to a year or more, then he shouldn't have a problem, especially if you're up front about it. However, if you've only been there a month or two and you're already asking to pay late then him sounding peeved is probably fair because he's thinking to himself, "How often is this going to happen?"

BoomChikkaBoom
You were up front with him, and that is to be commended.

It's not pleasant to have to be late, but you did the right thing by addressing the situation head on.

He can be as peeved as he wants. It won't change anything.

Blah Blah
4 days isn't too bad. He's probably upset cause he needs that money, it is his income. It's not a routine, and I'm sure you've been there for awhile?

Well... he knows where you live. :)

If possible pay him part/ most of it so he thinks you're being somewhat responsible.

Much better to be open and honest with him. It sets a good foundation for later also - that he can trust you. That makes you a desirable tenant and maybe he'll keep that in mind next time he wants to raise your rent.

Good for you for telling him and facing up to a tough situation!

Its better to tell them up front then have them wondering if you are going to pay at all. Honesty is always best.

I doubt it's that big of a deal. I think (legally?? depending on where you are) you are supposed to have 5 days.

I doubt there will be a problem. Its always best to be upfront about these things cause keep in mind that your landlord has bills too. They problem have a mortgage to pay. And if you are expecting money and the day comes and you don't get it you would be upset.
But if you are told there will be a delay then you would plan accordingly.
And if you've been there a year they shouldn't have a problem at all.

It's not unusual to have to get a little extention on your bills now a days. Talk to them as soon as possible and I'm sure they will understand, just think I =m almost possitive that youre not the only one in the place that will have asked, plus its only 4 days.

FrenchCanuck
your landlord have some payments to do, he is not there to lend you some money.. it is YOUR problem to come up with the money on time... not HIS problem.

If you have lived there a year with no problems and have paid the rent on time every month I dont see why he would be upset about it I would rather my tenant be up front with me. just tell them why you wont be able to pay until the 4th day.

It should not be a big deal if the landlord is a reasonable man or woman, just ignore whatever comment. What is he gonna do? evict you? and give you 3 months free rent?
Just don;t make a habit of beiing late.

Yea,I would just get if off your chest and tell them right away.I hate worrying about stuff like that.Let them know you will be paying the late fee if that is what is in the contract. Most contracts do have a late fee like $5 a day or something because they understand circumstances arise and things happen.Good luck!
