Ann | Is it really necessary (or safe) to provide my bank account number in a rental application??? |
We are casually looking at some apartments at this point, and (at least) one of the applications for the apartment complexes wants my bank name, address, and account numbers.
I can understand a credit check but do they really need to look at my bank account and see how much money I have to see if I qualify for their apartments???
I could possibly understand if I was trying to qualify for lower income housing but these are higher end apartments that I will be paying full price on and I don't think its any of their business how much $ is in my account.
Is there a reason they would need this? |

All of that information is PRINTED on every check you write.
Why would it matter if they have it or not? They can't do anything with the information. |

No, all they will really check is your credit and income. They can check whether you have bounced checks. They don't need your bank info. You can if you like, and it is perfectly acceptable to say yes you have a checking and savings and your balance. But to give out account numbers is dangerous.
They should not even ask. |

Good catch! You are obviously a savvy shopper and wise to question the need to give out such personal information. Frankly, I'm skeptical to give my social security number indiscriminately, too! Don't provide the information -- fill out only that part of the application that you feel comfortable with. You can add an asterisk where you do not wish to provide the information -- then put an asterisk at the bottom and explain that you will be happy to provide that information only when it becomes apparent that you wish to move ahead with a deal. Otherwise, if you were to provide these numbers whenever it is requested, you are leaving yourself open to identity theft. In the event that you need SOME documentation that you would be financially qualified to take an apartment, your bank could provide a letter on your behalf which will provide the proof without the numbers -- people do that all the time and the banks are more than accommodating. |

absolutly not. i would NEVER provide bank account information. |

Suppose the landlord turns you down and you gave the bank info on the application. What is the landlord going to do with that info? |
|

Jake Gold

Yes. It is standard with every apartment I have ever lived in. |

NO! Don't give them that information. In fact, make copies of that rental app and bring one to your bank and one to the local pd in that district, and also speak to the city clerk of what ever town that rental is in and hand them a copy of that application. Those people should get in some trouble for that! |

no they don't need your bank account. i would find another apartment. sounds like a scam to me. they could ask for a bank statement instead... |

I don't like it.
But honestly, they cannot see your balance, just by looking at your account number. It is more to prove that a bank was willing to give you an account. |

As soon as you write a check for credit or deposit, they have it. They can't access you balance info or take money without your authorization. |

I believe that it has to do with the fact that if you did not pay rent and ran out on contract/property that they have more information to track you down or settle up a payment you owe. I don't know exactly, but like above people have posted, I would leave it blank and let them know that you are more than willing to provide that information, when a deal has been moved farther along. |
