D. | Is it rude to ask what exactly the commision rate is on the interview? |
I'm going to be interviewed tomorrow by a Real estate broker, and i've been thinking about which questions to ask him. Do you think it would be rude for me to ask what the inital commission split will be if I'm hired? |

I would be careful in doing it but most jobs at the end of my interview when they ask if you have any questions I have asked what exactly the pay was. I have never had an employer that minded the question just make sure that it doesn't sound like your biggest concern. |

Yes. That's part of a job interview. "Hey, how much money am I going to be making."
It's not just about whether or not they want to hire you, it's also about whether YOU want to work for THEM. |

Of course it's not rude. You're not getting a salary, you are working on a commission split. Say you do their training (some brokers have training)... spend money, and come contract sign time you see you're on a 30/70 split (no, NOT 70/30, but 30/70... so YOU get 30 broker gets 70). That is not good at all unless the property is over $500,000 and commission is 2.5%+.
And dont forget it's not like getting a high paying job in that there's going to be 5 interview or something.
The main things you should know by the end of the interview:
Franchise fees
Deal fee (this is in addition to the broker's percentage)
Desk fee (shouldnt be any)
Commission split
What YOU get for the franchise fee/other fees. Business cards, signs, etc...
Again, you do NOT want to get stuck paying all kinds of things and high commission percentage and then find out you get absolutely nothing for it. |

I think at the end of the interview if all goes well, then it's perfectly acceptable to ask those kinds of questions. |

this is a chance for them to interview you and a chance for you to interview them. Ask any questions you have. |

It's perfectly acceptable to ask such a question. It directly affects your bottom line wages, so why not? I have been a Manager for over 12 years and have had numerous people ask that type of question....Like I said...It affects your cash flow, so it's perfectly acceptable. |

Not rude at all. I suspect the split will be part of the broker's pitch, you probably won't have to ask. |

Whoa - you have totally got the wrong attitude going into this thing. The broker is not interviewing you, you are interviewing him/her. They work for you, and you should be the one asking the questions. Remember, when it comes down to it, you are the one paying his wages.
And no, it is not rude to ask what the commission rate is - but do yourself a favor, and explain what commission you want. There is currently a over supply of Brokers (their numbers almost doubled nationwide between 2001-2005). There are plenty of brokers out there for you to get exactly what you want.
Do yourself another favor, and do some research into what questions you should be asking of your new employees (i.e. Realtor/Broker). You are going to be the one paying them, they work for you. |

It's not rude at all, probably one of the first questions you'd want to ask. I would ask for a reduced commission, maybe 3.5 -4%. This is money you are spending if you are listing a house, if you're buying, you aren't paying for it anyway so it doesn't really matter how much they make and you'd be more concerned with what type of service you'll get. |

You need to turn your thoughts around a bit. It is you that they need, not you needing them. During the interview, you will be pointing out all that you bring to the table and all you have to offer. They need to know that your services are valuable and need a fair financial consideration. The only way you find that out is to ask. |

Try asking the question differently. Tell them "I want to make sure I'm not wasting your or my time. What type money deal are we talking about?" |

Not at all -- it's your INCOME -- which is important. Just let the interview go on for a while -- and ask it after other questions/answers. It's not at all rude. It means you also care about how you are going to live and I think they should understand that. |

That should be your FIRST question!
You are a 1099 independant contractor. There is no more important question to ask. |

I've been doing real estate for over 12 years and that would be the most important question to ask as they all vary and it helps you know what company has the best deal for you as well as for them. |

I have always been told that you do not discuss any salary until the second interview or if they express there interest in hiring you. Usually if you get a second interview you have a good shot at the job. |

No its the first question u should ask its your money to dont let them take all of it. |

Not rude but rather inappropriate. You never ask about compensation and benefits at an ititial interview. This work have you appear overly interested in the compensation rather than the work involved. If and when you are offered the position, come prepared with as many questions as you like. Whaver the offer is, thank them for the opportunity and ask them if you can discuss it with your significant other if this is applicable and if you could have a few days to consider the offer. |

He'll tell you during the interview...that is usually part of it.
Understand that you don't get "hired" you get signed on. You will not be paid a salary or receive any benefits...anything you generate you have to go out and pound the pavement and bring the business in yourself. |
