Jennifer A | Is it safe living in a first floor apartment? |
Hi all! What are your opinions on ground floor apartments? I am a 20 year old female who will be living alone for awhile and the apartment I fell in love with happens to be on the first floor (located in Denver). Here's more info:
* It is in a good neighborhood. Statistically, it is the 3rd safest neighborhood in Denver, with only 120 incidents of crime reported in 2006. It has even less crime than my boyfriend's current neighborhood, and he says he feels very safe there (he lives in a townhouse).
* It has an intrusion alarm. (Leasing agent said only 6 out of 600 residents actually use the alarm).
* Windows have both ventilation locks and regular window locks (I'm not sure if the ground floor windows have any kind of bars too). Entry doors have double deadbolt locks, and a regular lock. Sliding doors have both screen locks and door locks.
* There is a 24 hour courtesy patrol.
If you had all of these protections, would you feel comfortable living on the ground floor here? |

By ventilation locks, do you mean locks that prevent the window from being opened beyond a certain degree?
I live in a first floor apartment. I have locks that prevent the window from being opened beyond like 5 inches. Also, locks that lock them closed. The windows are double paned and there are 2 sliding panels per window that connect to a third. So, what I figure, is that IF someone was to try to get in, they'd have to cut the screen, but wouldn't be able to get any of the windows out. They can only be removed by pushing up and then towards the inside of the apartment. Even IF an intruder got one out, there are two others, and the way they interlap, it would be impossible to gain entry.
I'm not crazy about the lack of privacy and potential lack of light on the first floor. My windows are near the entrance and so people are constantly walking by. I have window treatments, that I keep closed, but they let the light in, but don't allow you to *really* see in. Got them at Ikea. There is a lamp outside the building that reflects off the window, so it's very hard to see in.
You also have some features I don't have. An intrusion alarm?? Courtesy patrol?? Man, if you can look at your windows and determine that they'd be impossible to get into or impossible without you hearing and took advantage of the intrusion alarm, I'd feel really safe. On top of that, you have a security patrol man too.
I personally would not feel safe IF: my windows did not face the street or entry COULD be gained somehow, or if I didn't have a heafty bolt lock on the door. I wouldn't be able to sleep.
I have lived in one other first floor apartment that didn't have locks inside the windows. It was a "granny flat" so, it connected to my landlord's house through a door that I "wasn't allowed" to lock. I was paranoid ALL THE TIME. I hated it there. But, the locks inside the windows and locks that lock the windows closed, in my current apartment, give me all the peace of mind I need.
Hope this helps... |

are you serious? this sounds like the PERFECT place to live, if you want to live in an apartment.
if you want, there is a motion sensor out on the market, and when it senses motion, it will give out a bark of a dog that would scare the begibbies out of ANY intruder.
I suggest getting the motion sensor & the apartment... and then relax. |

I believe I read somewhere that statistically more people get killed or raped for living on first floor apartments regardless or there security settings. I think I read it in a Denver newspaper.
No matter where you live or how secure you are, there are always the possibility for danger or crime.
Just think about your neighbors? Do you know who they are? Can you trust them?
Keep your eyes open and try not to give too much information to others. Lock your doors and invite your boyfriend regular to your home. This might persuade your potential criminal to leave you alone. |

ok you really have to look at it this way statistics say that 1st floor is the most dangerous but nething can happen newhwere i have been living in a 1st floor apt and im only 18 living alone now. and nothing bad has happened yet *knock on wood* so u have to really go by how safe u feel. |

There is less crime on upper floors, but I dont care, I prefer ground level too. Its worth getting renters insurasnce and an alarm system to sleep better at night, crime can happen anywhere... |

Honestly I would prefer to stay on the first floor rather than the Ground floor.
Also I would like to know if your are renting that apartment or buying it? |

Most burglars enter through an existing opening; therefore locks on windows and doors are your first line of home security. Make sure all doors and windows are locked at night and when not at home. Also, Do NOT leave an extra key outside hidden.

It can be very safe living on the first floor. You have checked out the security and the neighborhood. You should be careful wherever you choose to live, but there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with this place. |

Sounds sure secure enough and safe. I would like it but you alone will have to decide. Ive always liked the first floor. bettyk |

Crime happens where it is easiest for the criminal. This is why a second floor is less likely to get hit - stairs to climb, easier to be detected, longer get-a-way time.
First floor units can also be safe though, especially if well lit, and few obstructions (shrubs, etc...).
I would advise a young lady as yourself to try and be on the second floor, use your alarms every time, keep alert always, and when feasible - know your security people and neighbors. |

Sounds as if the landlord really beefed up security. Check about the alarm and see how it works, 6 out of 600 isn't good but it may only need 1 to work. Or as long as you use it it will be fine for your apartment.
I lived in so called secure buildings on and people on the upper floors still got hit, because others let people in without checking to see who it was. |

Crime can happen anywhere! However, living on the ground floor can be danergous especially with people who target single women. Be aware ofyour surroundings lock your doors and be safe!
I've lived alone for 9 years; I've always live on the second or third floor but again I am always mindful of mysurroundings.
God Bless & Be Safe! |

I wouldn't worry too much. I like that you have 24hour courtesy patrol. Just don't go leaving your windows and doors wide open when you aren't in the house. |
