Jessica Lynne Mom of a Chug! | Is it weird to have or even ask for a "apartment" warming party for your 1st apartment? |
My Boyfriend and i are moving into our first apartment. Finally! I have waited 22 years to do this. Just a few months after my 23rd birthday, my bf and I will be moving into our first apartment. We chose about 6 to look at in the area and price range we wanted. But I know my family will give us money or get us like a toaster or something, but is it normal to have a warming party for this? Like my family and his family and maybe some friends come over for some food and drink to celebrate us moving out. And possibly get a few presents...Who else has these parties for any other reason? C'mon! But also I wanted a chance to make my first spreads and dinner and drinks. I've never hosted anything before, so it would be nice to host my own party. I'm pretty sure my mom and his parents will give us gifts before the party and on our birthdays and holidays, but is it normal to throw this or ask for this? Or is it tacky and rude? What should I expect out of this party if it happens? What kinds of gifts and also is it normal to have a list like at a store (Target) that people could maybe shop from? Additional Details P.S. It's our FIRST apartment.. We're not rich, so it's not going to be a big blow out! WHy don't you people read. I'm not shacking up. I'm moving out with my bf. We'll be on our own for the first time with no help to pay our bills. God! The least we could ask for is a microwave or a dust buster to help us out.. SNOTTY PEOPLE! |

No not at all. It's not something that is a norm, but heck celebrate! That's a big accomplishment. Label your invitations someting creative like "Come help us celebrate our first spot". Or "Come help us make our first spot warming". Though the building is not yours, the inside is something you want to make your own. Plus people love parties. It will be kinda cool. Make sure you put in the invivations that you are looking for gifts (even list the places or things you need) otherwise people may think they are just coming over to celebrate with food and fun. |

Having a party to show off your new digs and entertaining skills is fine, but avoid having a gift list that accompanying the invitation, that is tacky. If people want to bring gifts, they should do so on their own volition, the price of admission to your party sharing your new home should not be a gift other than friendship and love. |

A party is fine, but expecting gifts is tacky.
You get girts when you get married, and when you BUY your first home, but not for shacking up. Asking for gifts because you are shacking up sounds seriously tacky and low class. |

Well, usually this is done for people getting married. Some still frown on supporting a shack-up. But it depends on the moral persuasion of your family and friends. Good luck. |

Miss Manners here. It is tacky to host a party for yourself & ask for gifts which is what Housewarming says. My advice is to just host a party...end of summer, welcome fall, patio party, we're on our own, etc, if you have to give it a name. Everyone knows this is your first place. If they want to bring a gift they will. Just don't be so obvious as to ask for a gift. Very tacky. |

If you want to have a party to celebrate your new place that is fine. You invite folks for a house warming and then you be gracious and supply drinks and snacks etc. If folks want to bring gifts they may but they may not and you should not expect anything. No you absolutely do NOT register for a house warming party that would be so crass I can't imagine. |

Asking for a party for an apartment is tacky and rude. Especially since you're not even engaged or married to this guy.
When you get married and buy a house THEN a housewarming party would be acceptable. Right now it just seems completely out of line. |

It's a cute idea. People do bring presents to a housewarming party. In return they get a full dinner and lots of drinks and maybe even a DJ. You can't collect presents unless you really spend a lot of dough for the party. Are you ready. / |
