Is landlord allowed to have a copy of my mailbox key?
I've been in my rented flat for a few months and the other day the landlord sent someone to ask me for my flat key so he could have it copied for the landlord, he also wanted my mailbox key.
I told him I was going out so he couldn't have the keys immediately as I wasnt going to leave the flat unlocked (but really I just wasn't prepared to hand my keys over to a complete stranger) If the landlord wants a copy of the keys he will have to take them off me himself.
Anyway, I know the landlord has a legal right to a copy of my flat key but, is he allowed to have a copy of my mailbox key? The mailboxes are all inside downstairs, one for each flat. I dont feel at all comfortable giving up every scrap of privacy in my life if even my mail is allowed to be accessed by someone else.
I already have a copy of my mailbox key for safety in case one is lost, but I hadn't planned on giving it to the landlord. Isn't mail private?
Just thought I'd check before I hand it over.
Additional Details
going off some of the responses, if losing the key is the only problem, then like I said I already have a copy cut, so if thats the only reason a copy is needed, I would rather give the copy to one of my parents for safe keeping. I see no reason why he needs a key if he isn't allowed to access it anyway. As long as someone I trust has a copy then I cant see the need for him to have one too.

As the landlord is the owner of the property he is entitled to the keys for any and all parts. The mailbox while communal is still apart of the property and as such they are within their right to have a copy.

He should not be sending his personal post to the property anyway, and he should not collect yours either; you are correct that post is legal protected to be private. But for completeness and record keeping I would agree that the landlord needs a copy of all keys. Despite you having spares it is amazing how many go missing or how circumstances catch you off guard.

I agree with you on the representative, it should be the landlord or someone appointed by the landlord who can provide proof of identity. I would not hand over keys to a strange either, but maybe it might be wise to pass your concerns over and say that you are happy to release the keys to him but you would prefer that he collect them himself.

The landlord has a problem. Frequently tenants do not return their keys when they leave, so the landlord retains a key. Then when the current tenant leaves without returning the key, he can just make a key for the next tenant. If he loses his copy and the tenant does not return the keys, he with the assistance of the mailman will have to buy a new lock to change the lock and throw out the old lock. He probably made a mistake and gave you his last key. I doubt that he is interested in what is in your mailbox.

briar_angel
It depends on what state or country you live in...but in most places that is illegal because he could be stealing your mail and you may not even know about it. Also, it might be considered as a violation of personal property.

There is no way I would hand one over, I would rather find somewhere else to live. I know its hard but sit tight and if he persists, tell him he would need a court order. Then I would take him to court for harassment.

He could steal your bank cards etc, and Your ID.

If the above comment is true that he is worried about cost of replacement lock in case you loose the key tell him you have a spare key kept at your parents house so even in the event of a major fire and you have to move out there will be a key for him,for the next tenant.

Sounds like you were almost the victim of a scam.

in the US, the answer to NO. Only the person actually on the lease will receive a key - from the post office. You take your lease into the post office and get a key. Sometimes, the old tenant will give the key to the landlord, who will give it to you.

You can't make copies and if you lose your key, the postal service will give you a new one.

Yes legally the mailbox is his property.

He is Not allowed to access the mailbox while your leaving there , and i suppose if he does need it he would have to give 24 hrs written notice
as he would if we wanted to enter the actual property,.

His dilemma is he prob wants a copy in case you lose it and then he will have to pay out a lot of money to get more keys cut.
give you ll a call tell him you have a spare key and you will keep it safe - tell him how you feel im sure he will understand

The mail box is the property of the USPS. No he does not have the right in the US, but you sound like you are from England.

Just ask him why we wants a copy.

You do not have to give him a copy! It is the law the no one except yourself is allowed to access other peoples mail or mailboxes. Just because he is renting the place to you does not mean he gets a key. The mail box does NOT belong to him, it IS property of USPS! DO NOT give any one you do not know or the landlord, a key to your mailbox, even if this has to go to court.

Im in UK
I think this might have been a scam, as if it was for real, the landlord would have either come himself or at least contacted you.

Lets presume its not a scam. It is very very unusual for the LL or LA not to retain a key, its one of the most important things. If the LL is stupid enough not to keep a key then tough.
You do not have to give him a copy or your key if you don't want to.
My question would be "why do you want a key", if he says, in case you loose yours, then tell him you have taken care of that, and as for a mail box key, that is not on.
I would wait to see if the LL comes back to you, and if he does ask why he wants one, and if your going to do it, only had key to LL.

No. he is not suppose to have a copy of your mailbox key. It's like hes messing with private property. It's like you going to him and asking him for his. That falls under the category with private stuff or private property. So no.

well maybe he wants it in case you did lose it, it would be convineant for you to just to easily get it from him.

sweetiegirl_mx_99
I understand how you feel since I dont like the idea of anyone else having the key for my place, however, it might not be that bad. I think the mailbox is part of the property too...and in case you lose the key, he'll have to change the lock for the mailbox. As you said...Mail is private, yes! but having the key doesnt allow him to open or browse through your mail.
Talk to him and hand him the keys yourself but he might not have time to go make a copy of it, you know...they are always busy.. :o)

Yes you have to give him a copy. It's no different than every persons unlocked mailbox along the side of the road in my city. Get over it.
