Read the lease. Many of them require that all utilities be on and fully paid-up. |

well i don't know where you live but in most states a utility bill must be in your name and if your called and had the service turned off then it has nothing to do with you rent you will almost certainly have to pay but utilities no unless it was in the lease that you will still pay the bill. |

It depends on how the lease is written. I require utilities to be on at all times in the properties I have. the main reason for this is that if someone can't pay their electric bill I don't want candles lit all over the house for light. That is a fire hazard. Additionally I don't want the gas off as I want to ensure that heat is provided to the unit at a minimum level during the winter, etc.
I know this is different than your situation as you are not living in the property but if it is in the lease it is something you are bound to.
if it is not in the lease, the landlord cannot arbitrarily tell you that you need to have them on (unless it is part of the local law). It must be part of the legal requirements |

I think you should sub rent your apartment for some one who is willing to live in a slum apartment. As you signed a lease contract, it is a legal document for both parties to comply. I think it is good for the landlords in the US. My friend, Frank, he had a hell lot of problems to deal with at least three tenants in the past two years for not paying the rents and utilities. He is the unlucky landlord needed to spend 10k (Hong Kong dollars) legal fees to the Hong Kong government Land Tribunal office and court plus legal advice from the lawyers for just evict the troubled tenants. Sub rent for a short rental contract, say, to compensate the equal among of money you pay out for your rental contract. Try to find a better place to live next time. Don't just move in without observing the place thoroughly. |

you should check into the landlord/tenent laws in your state. if you are responsible for the utulities and had them turned off then he had no right to turn them back on and try to make you pay the bill. |

If your landlord is not holding up his part of the lease agreement, you have the right to void the lease. It sounds like you are still paying rent but not living there so the lease is still enforceable and part of your lease probably says's you have to pay utilities. I would try to get out of the lease. If he hooked up the utilities that might mean he has rented the place to someone else and that VOIDS your lease. Good luck |

Seems odd. I would ask him why the utilities need to be on. If you live in the north and your lease extends into the winter, he may need them to keep the pipes from freezing. I would see if there is a clause in the lease that requires you to leave them on. The utilities shouldn't cost much since you aren't using them.
Why isn't he trying to rent the property. I would be happy to have someone move out and continue to pay until the place is rented. Did you tell him you had moved and he could find another tenant? You shouldn't be on the hook for more than a month or two. Check with a lawyer.. |
