Is my landlord ripping me off? I pay more for the same apartment?
I moved into my apartment building about 6 months ago, with a rent higher than my neighbors' (who are my friends). My landlord told me that everybody in the building would be having their rents raised to the amount I am paying. . . Well 6 months later, I am still paying more for the same apartment (2 bedrooms, same everything) than ANYBODY in the building. None of them have leases. Is my landlord ripping me off and what can I do?

This happens all the time. I raise the rent on all new tenants, but I try to hold off on the long term ones because if they leave I'm out at least a month's rent until someone else comes in. Their lease may go until next Feb or whatever, but when they renew they may get an increase. I also raise rent on tenants who are chronically late in the hope to get them to leave before they fall behind and screw me out of three to four month's rent. The landlord also has to pay for upgrades and such when an old tenant moves out.

Tim
You can do nothing. You agreed to the amount.

No, as long as it isn't against any rent cap law.

If you feel ripped you might want to start looking elsewhere, that stuff eats away at you day by day.

Brown Sugar
Tim is right. the only thing that you can do at his point is to either continue paying the higher rent or move out.

Your Landlord can charge anything they want. The problem lies with people talking about what they pay. You obviously didn't think the rent was to much otherwise you wouldn't have signed an agreement.

Worldly25
You cannot do anything You accepted the amount of rent when you took the apartment. What the landlord charges is not your business

estielmo
Threaten to move, but he is not ripping you off if he is charging what he said he would and you agreed.

Pebbles
You agreed to your price. Don't worry about what everyone else pays.

Landlords often don't like to raise rent on older tenants as they are happy not having to find a new person to move in.

Your lease and rent amount has NOTHING to to with anyone elses in the building. Every unit does NOT have to have the same rent or lease. You cannot compare yours to anyone elses.

Nothing you can do.

Does your apartment have upgraded appliancues vs. the other apartments? Are your utility bills included rather than theirs. Did you move in after they did, when the landlord was raising rent? These could all be factors.

Lirpa
Um, get a lawyer. I would.
