Is older house dangerous to live in due to asbestos paint & stuff like that?
I heard that you can get a cancer. Is it really dangerous? Besides the paint, anything else that might cause health problem in older houses? I am talking about houses built in 1950s & 1960s. How about a house built in 1910? I live in Los angeles

Not necessarily all old houses are dangerous to live in, just like not necessarily all new houses (house sickness etc.) are dangerous to live in. If you go to your local government office they should be able to check and let you know the result.

unless your crumbling and snorting the asbestos or eating old lead paint.. you should be fine.

have your home checked for radon and mold, those are more of a danger than the asbestos and paint. AND Radon and mold can be in any home, newer or older.

To research information on those issues you should visit the experts, in this case the government since they are the watchdogs on these issues.
You should look at these sites;
For the EPA's publication, "A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home"
http://www.epa.gov/ http://www.epa.gov/iaq/molds/images/moldguide.pdf
EPA’s web site on LEAD in paint, dust and soil: http://government.westlaw.com/linkedslice/default.asp?SP=DCC-1000
EPA’s Required Lead Disclosure from Sellers and brokers:
http://www.epa.gov/lead/pubs/leadbase.htm
EPA’s web site on ASBESTOS
http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/
EPA’s web site on RADON
http://www.epa.gov/radon/realestate.html
Best of luck on your research

Asbestos was used in siding, roofing and flooring in many old homes. The danger with asbestos is when it becomes airborn, such as when it is removed or disturbed. If you don't disturb it it's not really a factor. Lead was used in pipes and paint. If you have lead pipes have them replaced. Lead paint should be professionally removed if you have kids otherwise just paint over it. Mold is a MAJOR problem with houses that leads to all sorts of health problems.Radon is an odorless gas that causes cancer too. When you buy a house most sellers are obligated to disclose weather the house has any of these problems, but I would invest in a home inspection!

As far as Asbestos, that is not in the paint. It is a form of insulation that was used back then. It is VERY dangereous. When crews come to clean it up, they where masks and all sorts of gear. It has to be kept wet when being removed in order to keep the dust down. STAY AWAY FROM IT! The thing that is from pain is lead. There is a tons of lead based paint from the 50's and 60's era. Your landlord would (or is supposed to) give you a lead based paint disclosure. As for a home in 1910, I would much rather live in a house in a time frame where they where not experimenting on different chemicals then at a time in which they where.

I'm not sure of the danger but you can have a company come in and inspect to see the actual problems in your home.

well asbestos is dangourous to tamper with, though if it is left alone it doesn't create any issues the plus points are that it is fire proof! the risk is not from cancer but rather asbestosis, its a chronic condition where asbestos grows in the trachia and oesgougous creating breathing difficulties it is fatal though you have to breath the dust in so if it is not disturbed and creates no dust then its safe. lead paint, can cause cancer, testicular and skin cancer included, also its a bugger if your trying to install a wireless network, but if you don't lick it you will live.

The answer is yes! You can definately get some form of cancer and/or respiritory problems. Are you renting or do you own? If you are renting then you can call the health dept and report the situation. They will remove you from the property and comdemn the house if it is to be a danger . More than likely you can seek the assistance from the red cross for temp housing since that is considered a disaster. If you own the houses then you need to look for professionals to fix the problems before you have some serios health issues. Good luck and if I were you I would go see a Dr. to make sure you don't have any medical conditions yet. Tell the Dr you are concerned and they will get you in to get checked. If you are renting I would most definetely contact a lawyer about that.

you can get cancer. I don't believe people can sell or rent out places that have asbestos anymore. definetly have it checked out.
