Is paying 350 per month for a room expensive?
I'm planning to move in with a friend and I get a room in a big house for 350/month includes electricity water, etc.

Depends on where you are, the house, and the surrounding neighborhood. That sounds like a pretty good deal for most places in the US because the utilities are included, but if you want to know for sure, look at what apartments and other rooms are renting for in the area. Also, make sure to find out just what the overall rent and utilities cost. I can say that sounds like a great deal by the standards where I live (and we have some of the lowest costs of living in the country) if it's really a big, nice house.

Just make sure your friend is responsible and respectful of your space before you move in and return the favor to your friend. I've seen a lot of great friendships go sour when they move in together and freeload or get on each others' nerves. You can tell a lot by how clean they keep the place. Too clean might point to an uptight neat freak, while a messy place could mean they're irresponsible and will take advantage of you once you move in.

Sounds great - a big house would cost $1200 more or less, depends where you're from. Any way, 350 for a room with expenses would be awesome.

estielmo
And full run of the house? Be sure of the lifestyle you will share.

b_friskey
That's not too bad if it includes utilities, the electric bill for a big house could be very expensive, so I think you might be getting quite a good deal.

Jennifer S
Not in California. A few years ago I paid $450 + utilities and I shared a bathroom. That was a great deal at the time.

NMMNG
Sounds like a hell of a good deal. Of course it depends where you are.

Cribber
No that is not too bad. However, depending on where you live, if you went in with a room mate you could split rent and have your own privacy and so on for the same thing. But if you live in an expensive area, that isn't bad for a room. Just be sure you know what is expected, and what the rules are. Most of the time these things go bad because of someone not paying on time because it is a friend, or because they violate 'house rules'

sounds like a steal in L.A. or S.F. but not in Podunk, IA

We're currently waiting to build a house so we moved in with family and they said we could just pay the additional utilities etc, and I am paying about $350. They just compared the electric bill to last years and all. Of coarse, we are in the game room outback and running the air conditioner that normally doens't run so we're actually using that much more electricity but regardless, I think it's a good deal.

LOCATION is a key factor .... BUT; just off the cuff , I'd say it is a he** of a deal ....

I rent my xtra two bedrooms out for $100 and $115 per week here in central Florida ....

maxmom56
Not really. However, I would get it writing that all the utilities are included. Heating and cooling are expensive and will be going up. Make sure you know whether you will actually be expected to pay more when the bills go up and that you have it in writing.
