Sanj M | Is the homeowner responsible for ice on sidewalk? |
if ice is built up due to water from the sprinklers is the homeowner responsible. Though the sidewalk is city property |

It depends on your lease and if its a single family home.
Your lease may state that you are responsible for snow/ice removal and lawn maintenance. Check it.
Most single family homes, the tenant is responsible for the ice/snow removal. They live there, LL doesnt. If its an apt complex, the LL is responsible.
I own duplexes and the lower tenant is always responsible for lawn/ice/snow maintenance. If there is no lower tenant, the upper is responsible.
Hope this helps. |

Call your city or county streets department. It really depends on where you live. In our city the driveway and sidewalks must be cleared within 48 hours of the end of a snowfall. I would assume it to be the same if our sprinklers froze the sidewalk. |

Cool. You just gave me an idea that will help me pay back student loans. I'm just kidding.....or am I? lol.
I could never do that. I would also never pay for someone who broke their leg walking on "my" sidewalk when it's raining outside and it's 25 degrees! That's their fault. |

Yes, in most areas of the US, the homeowner bears the responsibility for keeping snow and ice from building up on the sidewalk in front of their homes.
While your municipality may have some liability, as far as the sidewalk is concerned, be sure if some one falls and injures themselves on your sidewalk you will be sued. But, hopefully your personal liability from your homeowners insurance will respond.
Best bet: Get some rock salt and a shovel! |

They are responsible to maintain it, but you are responsible to use caution and not fall.. and be a victim. |

Yes, the homeower is. Any sidewalk directly in front of the home (at least, that's the way it is in the county I live in.) |

The sidewalk may be owned by the city, but it is the homeowner's responsibility to make sure that it is clear of ice and snow. If anyone slips and falls on the sidewalk because it was covered with ice or snow, the homeowner is liable for the injury. Besides, if it is cold enough for water to freeze into ice, what are you doing watering your lawn? You will just end up killing the grass. |

yes, I believe they are in most places. If there is ice in front of your house, I would take care of it just to be safe. Cheaper to spread some ice melt than it is to get a lawsuit.
I would call your city to make sure, though. |
