Is the landlord responsible for installing a phone jack in a room?
I want the "extra" room to be my computer room but there is no jack. I called the phone company and they charge $150 to install one. Can I bill the landlord?

Not only can't you bill your Land Lord, if you should decide to put the jack in. You also can't take it with you when you leave and if you did it without permission from your Land Lord according to the laws of some states the land lord may be able to keep a portion of your security deposit to remove the jack. I would run a phone line to your computer from the nearest phone jack or you could purchase a remote phone jack that plugs into the electrical outlet. Whatever you decide if you are going to make any changes to the apartment always get the approval from your land lord in writing. Verbal is never good enough, always in writing no matter how good a relationship you may think you have with your land lord.

No.

absolutely noooo............

No. This expense is for your personal convenience. If you do not want to pay that amount of money, simply get a line splitter and run a phone cord along baseboards and over doors to get the phone service where you desire.

nope. but you can buy a device for a lot less than $150 that creates a wireless phone jack in any room but plugging one piece into the jack you have and the other into an electrical outlet wherever you want the 2nd jack. Best Buy Circuit City etc. would have it.

No - it's up to you to sort the problem out, but you will need your landlord's permission to undertake the work.

Ask the landlord for permisison to add a jack, or even ask them to add the jack.

You can bill the landlord, but the landlord isn't going to pay you for it and if you withold it from the rent, a smart landlord will send you a notice of late rent.

If you install it, you have to leave it for the next tenant.

If you run a line for the jack, you can be billed by the landlord for its removal, and if you screw up on the installation, you are responsible.

I had a tenant who was drilling through a wall to run a phone line and went through a water pipe. OOPS! He ended up paying a $600+ bill for repairs to the pipe, the wall, and the floor ... partly because the idiot didn't immediately turn the water off and what would have been minor turned major.

Hello. If you have one jack in some other "main" room, you can extend the wires to any room you like. If you want to install an extra jack in the room and want to bill the costs to the landlord, you have to learn if that extra jack was supposed to be there. If it had been there, but was removed, perhaps during the repairs, then you are free to give the bill to the landlord. If this room was without a jack, you either can extend the wires yourself or pay for that, but in this case your landlord has noting to do with it.

Good luck!
