Is there an agency that supports tenants rights?
I have a friend in rented accommodation and his Landlord is a waste of time not effecting the simplest of repairs yet increasing the rent. Is there anyone my friend can turn to for support?

He can file papers in court himself to start depositing his rent with the court who will withold it from the landlord until a hearing. It is important that he not just stop paying as it could get him in trouble and there is a legal way to withold it. The local court clerk's office should have these papers available either online or you can pick them up at the courthouse and fill them in yourself. There is a small filing fee but it is minimal and you really don't need an attorney for this kind of thing, especially if money is tight. I just went through a whole big thing with my landlord and found that any info you need is easily accessible on websites for your county/state. They really are very simple to use and laid out in a way that makes it easy for the layman to understand, I have never had any type of training (I am a stay at home Mom) and I was able to scare my landlord into a settlement without even going to trial. Good Luck!

BTW: what county/state is he located in?

Check your yellow pages. Many legal fims can assist in tenants rights. I'm not aware of groups doing pro bono work. Maybe a google search could turns something up. Otherwise, you may need to do the legal research work yourself if cost is a factor.

If you are a member of a pre paid legal program, you should be albe to get free legal advice with a phone call or two. Good luck.

It depends on what state you live in.

First get your 'tenants rights booklet/handbook' then go online to find out which are the organizations that help in your state/city.

Good luck.

Not sure what State you are in, in the Phoenix, (AZ) area, the City has an office that takes care of complaint for Renters and well as Landlords. You might be able to look in the yellow pages or call information to get a number to call. Check with State your friend is in to see what they have available on the right as well a the law for renters. They will let you know what your friend needs to do to file a complaint.

If they are serious repairs, contact the local Enviormental Health Department at the council, they have the power to force the landlord to do repairs.

do they have a contract? Call your tenant trough the Better Business Bureau.

Check your local government listings, this is something that would be handled by your state capitol. In New Jersey for instance, we would go to Trenten and contact the department of housing.

tenants union.

Also if he has documented proof he can sue in small claims court. They hate slum lords and will give him 2X what he is asking for.

Ah the joys of renting, I f*cking hate it! I live in NJ and I had one hell of a horrible time in a place I rented. What I did, was contacted the local police department for information on what to do. You'd be surprised the information they have and are willing to share. I actually had to contact the health department for mold which was utterly usless b/c they were unable to help me since I did not own the home. My heart goes out to your friend. Definitley try the local police department, they can point him/her in the right direction and can offer advice. Good luck!
