charchar88 | Is this fair to my roommates? |
Ok I live in an apartment while going to college with my younger brother and 2 other roommates who are his friends. Every month we each sit down and figure out what each other owes for each bill since each one of us chose to keep track of a particular utility and pay the bill to that utility and we collect from each other.
Its been fine all year however our local internet service called NTC communications is notoriously crappy and everyone in this town hates it but we have no choice at our apartment complex since it's the only service we can get ect. NTC provides basic cable tv (which randomly cuts out a lot) and basic internet (1.5 to 2.2 mbps variable) for a total of $90 a month which is a rip off for the service we get.
Well after a while (after they got rid of several channels I liked) and after random internet outages and no customer service when calling the phone, I said that's it I can't take this anymore I'm never at the apartment that much and can use my University's wifi for free which is 15mbps and when I'm home I eat and sleep that's it.
They said if I opted out and not paid my part of the bill even if I agreed to not use tv or internet (since I don't often) it's still not fair since it increases their average rates ect (since we split the bill)
I saw their point of view and since we only have 3 more months to pay I agreed to stay and pay the rest of the way.
However I told my brother for next year if we end up with the same company/crappy service at our new apartment, opt me out. I will not pay the bill and not use the service ect since I spend most of my time on campus and can use campus internet for free ect.
He got upset at me saying that since it will increase their rates and I told him they can also choose not to use cable and internet for the outrageous rate their charging, but they insist they need TV and internet (that's all they do all day!)
I said it's my right to choose not to want it and I said while I agree it would be unfair to suddenly opt out mid way through this past year, next year and telling them this now way ahead of time, I thought it was completely fair.
Why pay for utilities I think are a rip off and that I really don't need since everything I need is on campus.
Yeah since I'm paying it now I use it when I'm home but I'd gladly go without it an not pay the rip off prices ect.
Am I wrong? Additional Details Also recently I've been able to tether my laptop with my verizon phone service through my smartphone, the bandwidth came out 1mbps faster than this internet service! |

I don't think you're wrong at all. It's kind of you to go ahead and continue to pay for the rest of this year. You've given your brother and roommates plenty of notice now that you don't want to use the service in the future. So, either they can pay more for their shares or they can not have it. It's not unfair for you to not pay it IF you're not using it. You'll only look like a jerk if you say you don't want to and will not use it and then do. |

I don't think you are wrong at all. You are willing to continue to pay for the remainder of this year, even though you are not using the service. You have given them plenty of notice that you will not continue to pay next year. If they chose to continue to keep the service, they need to pay for it. If they can't afford it, then they need to not have the service. This is real life, something they need to get used to.
BTW - from my own personal experience it is never good to have a sibling as a roommate. |
|

My Take on It
 |
You are not wrong unless you do watch the TV or use the internet even rarely at the place you share.
I would definately get it in writing if you can get the other 3 to agree that you will not be held accountable for the internet or tv. Make sure your name isn't on that bill too.
The thing is though, you may be right in principle, but you might cause hard feelings which may affect your experience living with these guys. |

You are completely correct: If your brother and his friends cannot afford the higher cost without you included, then they can opt to go without. Cable and internet are NOT necessities and should not be treated as such. I think you are going above and beyond to continue paying the remainder of your agreement.
Just remember; even if they continue with the cable and internet services, do not continue to use them if you are not paying. It does not sound like this will be an issue for you at all. Just remind your brother and roomates that these bills are strictly optional, and they do not have to get it if they can't afford it. |
