Is this illegal?
I dislike my property company and would like to hang a sign in my apartment stating "do not rent from _____ company" so when prospective renters come and look at the apartment they see my sign. Is this legal to discourage renters?

If you post this on the inside of the apartment it is perfectly legal.
Rather than hanging a piece of paper that the manager could rip down before the prospective renter sees it---how about writing on the bathroom mirror with a bold Sharpie. The manager can.t wipe it off before it is seen. When you vacate the apartment you can clean it off the mirror with acetone (fingernail polish remover) and then wipe the mirror down with Windex.

Doesn't matter - if your unhappy - live out your lease and look for greener grass. You don't know if you will need that company in the future...to fix something or give a reference...Karma Baby

illegal probably not.
however deflamation of 'company character' maybe.
if u dislike property - move.
not ever one like pink flamingos from china.

It depends - what does it say in your contract about signage? Some contracts require approval of any signs or 'decorations' displayed where they can be seen by the public.

And ask yourself, assuming it is legal, and you do, will it help you to like your property company any better?

You could be sued. They may not win but they can take you to court. If you dislike it so much, why not just move out?

ktrb
It may not be illegal but it's definitely childish. Besides, your next landlord will be calling your present property company to find out if you're a good prospect. Do you think the sign will make it more or less likely to recommend you?

Beatrice C
Not illegal, but face it in the future someone is going to ask for a renters reference from your property manager and phrases like, "uncooperative" etc..... might not help you in the future.

Have you considered where you will live after you show this little display of temper tantrum? And it may not be illegal, but you can be sued (whether you have anything or not) for infringement on the rights of the company to conduct business.

Whatever your opinion is about the company, tell your friends but remember that when you go searching for a new place to live this company will be one of those you will need a reference from.

That would probably fall under free speech, unless your lease has a stipulation that you can't hang signs in the window.
