Isn't that what a security deposit is for?
I have lived in my home for 4 years. I call it a home, because it is not just a house. Recently, my dryer stopped working. They had it repaired, and said I would have to pay the bill because I had washed a feather blanket. They returned it with feathers inside the dryer. I just got notified I need to pay $300 for the dryer repair. I paid a $590 security deposit...before I moved in....I take good care of my home...isn't that what security deposits are for?

The security deposit is for in case you skip out, and don't pay the rent and/or trash the place.

This is different. The dryer stopped working because of the feather blanket you put in it; to be frank, you broke it, so you are responsible for the repair costs. If it had stopped working because of normal wear and tear, that would be the landlord's responsibility.

What does your lease say?

Normally, landlord pays for normal wear and tear. Mis-use of an appliance is your problem.

no - they are for cases of default on the rental.

No. The security deposit is to make sure you don't skip on the rent incase you do a fly by night scam.

You are resposnible for the damages to the dryer.. sorry!

no- security deposit is for damage of the property after you move out- caused by you while living there

schwildcat1977
No, Not really. The security deposit is for repairs AFTER you move out. It is not really supposed to be used for repairs you need to pay for while you are living there. If they use your deposit for this then there will not be much left to cover anything when you move out.

No, that is NOT what security deposits are for. Security deposits are held by the landlord so that there is cash available when you vacate the premises, and there are damages which need to be repaired. The deposit is not to be touched until the END of the tenancy.

No. The deposit is to take care of damages (if any) noted after you are completely moved-out. Ongoing damages are charged as they occur. If not, your amount available to pay for future damages would only be 290 now.

The security deposit is held separately from your rent money and kept for moving out purposes: repairs, back rent, fees, etc. What's left is given back to you. It's not a savings account to be tapped in to for every day repairs. Your lease probably states that you are responsible for costs due to negligence (in this case, drying a feather blanket). You have to foot the bill.

The security deposit is for damage you cause, however, they can require that it remain at 590. A deposit of 290 is too low.

The security deposit is held until you move out, and applied to any damages at that time. So yes, if you had decided you didn't need a dryer and told them not to repair it, then they would have taken it out of your security deposit when you moved. But that is not what happened. They fixed it right away, the money is out of their pocket, now it comes out of your pocket since you misused the appliance.
